Old/New Amiga PSU
Hi all - any guidance or experience with new and old Amiga PSUs? I have heard that an old PSU can be dangerous for classic Amiags - is this true?
Any recommendations for new PSU for A500/A1200? |

I replaced my 500 PSU with one from Meanwell, which means a bit of soldering and connecting wires correctly, a few years ago but I also bought one from amigastore.eu and both work fine. Don't remember which Meanwell I used, A RT-50B or RT-65B. It did fit in the original PSU case with some modification. This is the one I got from amigastore: https://amigastore.eu/en/683-a-power...006001200.html A bit expensive though. There are cheaper alternatives but I can't say if they're good or not. |

No offence, but judging by the question OP asks, it doesnt sound he’s that much into tinkering with electrical equipment. ONLY do those upgrades (like the one in the link above) if you are very comfortable with that sort of tinkering with electricsl equipment. For the rest, the safest option is to buy from a trusworthy manufacturer /seller. |

What are the benefits of a new Amiga PSU if the old one is working? |

If you have the early light 500 PSU it will not be enough if you add some modern hardware to it. If you have the later heavy version it should be enough as long as it's in good shape. |

Later PSU's (600's & 1200's) were light & crappy. Earlier PSU's (500's) were heavy like bricks & had more poke! |

You might be right. My 500 (rev 5 kick 1.2 wb 1.3) from 88 had the light one though, not really sure what counts as early here. |

But regardless, the Commodore power supplies are all old and worn and there are better options available in modern times. |

IComp's PSU is the best these days.
Powershark does fine too, providing you have a suitable USB C PSU. |

Why is it? Perhaps the ripple is lower? But something that is measurable only with an oscilloscope isn't much of a benefit if an Amiga works exactly the same with a Mean Well. Which can be adjusted to provided 5V at the plug... I know Jens blames every problem on the power supply if you don't have one of his but I don't think it's a very credible claim. |

@ Octopus66 It is nice, but make sure you get one with a UK Plug. - The advert you're referring to is for an EU plug. See PM. |

The IComp ones can boot straight my computers in any hardware configuration including Warp1260, PiStorm, Vampire, Blizzard1260 or PPC. My original PSU are long gone. Other stuff from Ebay or other sellers, are so so. Even two old sturdy bricks made my Mechy in the early 2010's sometimes fail to boot the Vampire V2. The Warp1260 does show the incoming 5V voltage and it is steady at 5V with the IComp PSU. In any case, when you are using an IComp PSU and raise an issue with another IComp hardware on their support forum, no one would dare blame your PSU anymore. |
