HOL / PHP technical question
Wotcha
This is really more a general PHP / MySQL question, but since HOL 'does' what I'm asking about, I figured I'd ask here. I'm putting together a database driven site, and to query the database through the URL, I'm using the old "www.sitename.com?variable1=1" GET business. HOL (and other sites) don't have any of that in the URL - just "hol.abime.net/1". How do you set this up, or can you point me in the direction of somewhere I can find out? I've tried searching sites, but I don't know what to call it! Cheers! |

It's something the web server does - and it's damn awesome what you can do with it.
Have a read up on URL rewriting in the Apache URL rewriting guide. http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/misc/rewriteguide.html IIS can also do URL rewriting but you have to pay for a plugin. |

I can't speak for HOL, but aside from rewriting the URLs in the web server process many PHP "frameworks" will also include functionality for this, calling specific functions and constructing parameter lists for them from sections of the request URL.
My own site http://www.girv.net is built using one such framework: Code Igniter - check out the URLs in the games or WHDLoad sections for example. |
