Bulk Edit Icon Default Tool
I often have cause to want to change the default tool for a group of icons. For example I might want a set of 50 or more MOD files to open with Eagle Player. Is there a way to bulk edit the icon's default tool rather than opening each one separately?

With DefIcons you should only need to change default tool once. So all mod files will use that. Alternative a simple script can do the batch processing. rexxtricks.library has GETDEFAULTTOOL() and SETDEFAULTTOOL() function for example.

Yep, definitely use DefIcons under OS 3.5/3.9.....otherwise there's IconHelper and a few other icon utils that will do the job if you have WB 3.1 or below.

DefIcons will only work for files that don't have an icon file associated with them. As daxb says, a simple ARexx script can be used to fix it. Under OS 3.5 or 3.9 it can even be integrated into Workbench, acting on all selected icons for example.

Thanks for the help guys, DefIcons is a nice tool that works well but only if there is already a default tool set, if the tool field is blank it does not work, but it's still a useful tool. I am no good at scripting so would not really know where to start doing that.
Thanks again. |

Edit: MIS might do the trick too. Sometimes the only way to find out is to play mad scientist and give some of these proggies on Aminet a go. Last edited by DrBong; 06 June 2016 at 20:35. |

If the icons have different associations or the empty field, agrees to delete all of the modules icons, and then create them from the system; you did that you'll want to save them all together.

How about expanding functionality....
Traverse directories for a given tooltype in icons eg. More and change it to something like eg. Sys:Utilities/MultiView Might be interesting too |

With rexxtricks.library and rmh.library you have (almost) complete control over icons incl. open icon information window. So if you like you can have everything.
