ShapeShifter 3.11 - MacOS 8.1 stole my FPU
Bonjour,
I had MacOS 7.5.3 running perfectly fine on my A1200 with 040 (Blizzard 1240T). I used the Quadra 630 ROM and the FPU was detected. Everything worked. The CPU type reported inside MacOS, was a full 68040 with FPU. The Math benchmarks where great (not that they are useful). I then installed MacOS 8.1 and everything works but the system reports no FPU. The "Apple System Profiler" application says the Macintosh model is a Quadra 900 with an 68LC040 CPU (which does not have a FPU). The real 900 had a full 68040. The Math benchmarks are miserable, which makes sense. I tried replacing the Quadra 630 ROM with a 900 ROM and deleted the PRAM file. No change. It all works but it still sees the 68LC040. I then read that the 650 ROM is the best. So installed that (and deleted the PRAM to make sure it starts fresh). No dice. Still no FPU. Does anyone know how to make MacOS 8.1 see the FPU again? |

Is MacOS 8 mode enabled in Shapeshifter? I remember seeing a fpu symbol in MacOS 8 when it booted. But maybe that's some sort of Software FPU extension.

Update: I re-installed MacOS tonight. Version 8.0 this time, not 8.1. And viola, the system reports a full 68040 again, with FPU. Jeeeeh problem solved.
Rebooted X times, FPU was still there. Powercycled the Amiga a few times. FPU still present in MacOS. Time to cook and spend time with the family. So I turned off the Amiga and came back several hours later. Powered on the Amiga, started ShapeShifter. Guess what.... FPU gone. System reports an 68LC040 again with no FPU. Rebooted, powercyled the Amiga. FPU has been gone ever since. WFT ???? What dark magic is this... While running MacOS 7.6.1 the FPU was always there. Always. With these 8.X versions, it's a bit like Elbonian Roulette... |

Update: since I installed the 3.1.4 ROM in this A1200, ShapeShifter always sees an FPU in MacOS 8.1
I can't explain it. I just wanted you folks to know in case you run into the same issue. |

It could be a bad pram file, try deleting it and see if the FPU shows up.

So for me (I cannot speak for others) the problem was likely caused by ROM 3.1 / WB 3.1 as upgrading to 3.1.4 has fixed it 100%. |
