Is It Possible To Change PPC CPU?

Hello

Is it possible at all to change the 603e CPU in the BPPC for maybe a 604e/G3? Is it possible to make it happen?

Regards

In theory, if you could find a faster 603e you could replace it, but you'd need BGA rework equipment to do so (maybe Amiga repair center would do it?) and the gains would be small, the fastest you're likely to find is a 300MHz one from a PowerMac 6500. Cyberstorm PPCs are more interesting, Apple provided a 350MHz 604e in the 9600, which again would require BGA rework to exchange, but does at least offer a decent jump in performance from a 233MHz one, though the power requirements and heat output at that speed are likely to pose a challenge.

Frankly, it really isn't worth it.

The first question is why? I'll go on a limb and say it is to improve the speed of an application or game. The answer to that is to completely change hardware, ie use a PC. Its hard to admit this, but after 20 years I am going to; there is nothing the Amiga can do that the PC cannot do faster. (ok, other than boot up, or write to a floppy whilst doing something else).

The technology is now just too old. I guess a comparison would be liking WinNT on a PPro200/512. The only way to go faster would be to use either the rare 1mb cache version - with probably no discernable increase - or the ultra-rare 333MHz overdrive solution... at which point one might as well invest an equal sum into a "give-way" PII or PIII solution.

yup, 99.99% positive
Since the pin layout is the same but they run at different voltage

hmm... simple job for JJB at Amiga Repair Centre France?

Do you know if the 68040 is socketed or soldered to the board?

If it's a Blizzard PPC it's not socketed, that's all I know
JJ at Amiga Center can upgrade '040 cards to '060
I'm thinking of sending my Cyberstorm MKII '040 to him to perform an upgrade
