I read the title of this thread and immediately started hearing the Leander attract mode music playing in my head. ;-)

Buggy Boy is another.

The PD Breakout variant Poing has one, with the bizarre twist that the scores generated by it actually go into the highscore table.

Are recent PD games in scope? because all my arcade remakes have an attract mode.

Technically speaking, do the title screens of Ultima III, IV and V count? They all show a short gameplay sequence under the title text.

Ugh has a demo mode, but strangely enough, it requires the player to press the joystick button once the demo level has loaded. You also need to press the button once after the game has loaded.

That's a cool find. Respect to the author. It seems that he uses a more loose definition of 'attract mode' though, as some of the games show an intro (which of course is also attractive ) but not a looping gameplay sequence as defined in this thread. But a great find in any case!

On that note, Paul Woakes' Mercenary series all have a great intro which uses the game engine, but the gameplay starts immediately after the sequence is over so they're "just" intros, not attract mode per se.

A few more games with attract mode/rolling demo, these are not in the YT list by Morgan Kell except for Space Harrier:

Cloud Kingdoms
Commando (shows only level backgrounds, does this count?)
Conqueror
Encounter (also by Paul Woakes)
Ironman Ivan Stewart's Super Offroad
Outrun
Space Harrier
Space Harrier 2
Starray
Superfrog
SWIV
Venus the Flytrap

I would not guess this in a million years.
I was thinking along the lines of some hardware trickery.

The "rolling demo" definition seems to be the strictest but is shows up a lot in dictionaries and glossaries. Tvtropes.org gives a more extensive definition:

An Arcade Game that isn't being played goes into "attract mode" (sometimes called "advertise mode", "demo mode" or "game over mode"note ), which is intended to attract passersby to play the game. Typical attract modes show several of the following elements:
  • The game being played by itself (with varying degrees of skill)
  • Cutscenes showing the game's Backstory
  • Character descriptions
  • Lists of high scores
  • Tutorials explaining how to play the game
So basically a game such as Continental Circus on the Amiga has attract mode according to this because it keeps switching between the title screen and a high score screen after loading.

A few more, also not on the YT list. I blame this thread for causing me to load games all day!

Alpha Waves
D/generation
Kid Gloves
Kid Gloves II
Killing Game Show
Magic Fly

I love days like that.

Jimmy White's Snooker has one too, plus the hidden 147 break mode.

It is true. Many games do not have Demo Rolling mode.

Agree! Essentially, it's a sort of silent invitation to beat the high scores displayed, a subtle challenge to potential players. This way, the game keeps engagement high even when not actively being played. This is a common feature in many arcade and retro games.

The Killing Game Show
Up Scope (1986, the arcade game - I initially confused this with the great sub sim "Up Periscope" for the C64. Why wasn't there an Amiga conversion?)
