CD32 nasty drive noise
I just had this happening on my CD32, the drive started to make an ugly noise, like if the disc was hitting something inside. It is the first time it does it and it didn't happen again.
Any ideas what this could be? |

Perhaps the disc was indeed in there a bit crooked?

There is no more noisy drive than in Dreamcast. Maybe your CD32 wasn't on flat surface.

Hahaha! No, it was Cannon Fodder and it did it in the middle of the game. I didn't move the machine or anything, but after trying again, it didn't repeat the error at the same point. Weird.
It sounded more like a "disc is hitting something" rather than "laser head is bumping against the end". I can only hope this is not getting fucked because then my CD32 will be as good as a doorstep |

Amiga will never die!

I've heard this once or twice in my CD32 over the years. All of a sudden it goes RRRRRRRNNNNNNN and sounds like something being repeatedly flicked by the spinning disc inside. I switch off and never hear it again, I don't know what causes it but it doesn't seem to do any damage. I've heard stories of CD32s spinning their discs too fast then somehow causing the drive lid to pop open and the disc launches itself across the room! Probably on models where the lid hinge is busted, I've seen people keep heavy books on top to prevent it.

How would the laser losing focus make the disc bang against something?
I checked the media, it may have some slight marks on the very outside (where there is no data) and in one part of it only (not around the disc in concentric circles), so it feels like the disc went off its spindle and did indeed bang something. How could this happen? Perhaps my door is faulty? I just remembered that there are people working outside and they have been making my house tremble as if I was in a quake recently, that could have set off the disc off its axis maybe. |

Seen it loads of times, but as I said an indication of this is the disc being marked. It could also be the lid coming slightly open, causing it to slip, but in all the CD32's I have owned, I have never had this problem. |

I still think ignoring Surf Ninjas is a foolhardy move.
Was Surf Ninjas in the same room as the CD32? |
