Supercars International DOS (hopefully not too off topic!)

Anyone up for this job? At a glance they appear to be the same (but more detailed 256 colour) versions of the maps from Super Cars II - but I'm not totally sure all of them are.

I was disappointed to see that the maps were exactly the same as Supercars II.
But there are some interesting 256 colour pictures.

Are you sure the maps are 256 color too?

I'm not totally sure that the maps are full 256 colour, but they are certainly more detailed than the Supercars II equivilents. For instance the roads are textured rather than flat shaded.

Cool, so what's the plan try and replace the 16 colour maps with the higher colour ones for aga machines?

Supercars 2 actually has 64 colour maps (EHB), so there's a pretty wide palette to work with. I figured I might be able to work some of the detail from SCI into SC2.

Guys, if you could do something like this it would be f$%king awesome

I love both Super Cars games on the old miggy and a few years ago I found out about Super Cars International for DOS...

Would be sooooo cool to have this on the Amiga; even though it's very similar to Super Cars II

Whoa whoa, not planning a full port of any means I'm only studying a partial graphical mod along these lines.

This is the first track from Supercars 2, the differently colored patch in the middle is a screenshot of Supercars International, but with some tweaks to fit the EHB palette SC2 uses. It's not a perfect example by any means (a proper artist could probably do a better job converting the palette) but shows the potential of being able to use higher track detail in the game.

It does lose more detail than i thought, compared to the original

I know you can't have it all, but the its seems like the mud and grass is losing detail in the colours and the track is just going from 1 flat colour to speckled 2 colours, i think if you can up the number of greys in the palette so the track at least is more closer to the PC version that would improve it alot.

A little. It's a bonus feature on our Supercars Disc

@AmigaJay I haven't investigated the palettes yet. I'm sure it's possible to find and replace them (the files in the disc image are all crunched but they can be decrunched easy enough) but I'm not totally certain what complications there are going to be - for instance I don't know how the cars, bullets etc use palettes, so if I change some it's possible it might make the rest of the game look bad. In any case I'll keep investigating if rips of the Supercars International maps emerge.

Edit: A second complication, with OCS palettes you've only got the basic 4096 colours. Without extra half brite for instance there are only 16 shades of grey, which could complicate things if we try to replicate the subtle differences. A full blown AGA version would do the Supercars International graphics justice but that's way beyond my capability!

You'll be disappointed. More colors, more comm screens, more weapons, but otherwise same as Supercars II, and not the amiga feeling like in supercars II

Just had a quick blast and if I'm honest I really enjoyed it. To discover another game from this series after all these years is quality (I was amiga back then so my dos needs have all been via emulation years later which I guess is why I missed this?).

I think the only thing so far (in the brief time I've had on it) that I'm not so keen on is the music. I'm loving the slightly more polished visuals though.

I'll have to try your super cars 3 java game that's posted on here too.

You HAVE to try Supercars 3, yes. There's everything: the music, the circuits, the comm screens, more circuits, more colors,... the only thing missing is the excellent car physics from SC2.

I have been tinkering with JOTD's excellent Supercars III game a little bit lately.
It made me want to change up the track GFX a bit...my version of the tracks are 2x the size of JOTD's release...but I shrank them down a bit to fit them in.

I have also started to rip the tracks from Supercars International...an ongoing thing..maybe it will get finished, maybe it won't...haha, but a lot of fun can be had in the tinkering.

And here is the first of the ripped tracks from Supercars International (clean up needed, will happen asap)

I don't want to disappoint you but i think that this track is the same as Supercars II easy level track 1.

They didn't even bother to create new tracks. All they did is that they allowed to be raced in reverse (which changes the race completely, so it's a good and cheap idea)
