Supra 500XP won't detect hard disk!

Hi guys,

I have this Supra 500XP for many years on my A500.
Last time i used it was 10 years ago.
This weekend I connected it again to my A500. The Supra 500XP didn't find the harddisk. Although I can hear the motor of the Quantum drive spinning.
The 1MB ram in the Supra was detected and worked flawlessly.

This morning before going to work I tested the Quantum hard disk in my A590 and the disk was detected.
I had a WB 1.3 floppy in my A500 so i think that's why the A590 didn't boot from the Quantum drive.
Once the Workbench 1.3 was loaded from floppy I could access the 2 partitions on the Quantum drive.
I'll try this evening without the floppy inserted.

Questions:
What can i do to make the Quantum boot again in the Supra 500XP?
Are there any diagnose steps I can apply?

Any help would be kindly accepted.

All the best,
Mo

Thanks for the answer Jope.

I verified the external dipswitches yesterday. There is block of 5 dip switches. 1,2 &3 is for the SCSI device, fourth is for autoboot and the fifth is for RAM on/off.
The SCSI is set to zero (first 3 down), fourth is also down for the autoboot and the fifth is up to enable the RAM.

This evening i will check the connectors and cables in Supra for any oxidation and see what it gives.
You never know after ten years in the attic

All the best,
Mo

Exclamation

Coming home i did the following:
I've removed my WB 1.3 floppy and booted the a590 with the Quantum connected.
It booted just like it was 10 years ago with the Supra 500XP.
I noticed that the Quantum Prodrive LPS was faster than the Seagate 325N that came with the A590!

The Quantum drive is thus OK, so back to Supra 500XP again:
  • - I've disconnected and reconnected all the cables.
  • - Reseated all the IC's
  • - Connected the Supra 500XP to the A500. Motor of Quantum is spinning but drive led is not active.
Yesterday I runned SupraHDtools from my Gotek and it didn't detect the Quantum.

So what can i do more?
Any help is welcome.

All the best,
Mo

Which WB are you using?
Try to see if the Supra is detected as a SCSI board. Maybe use Sysinfo or similar.

Are you sure the SCSI Id = 0 for the software to detect the HD?

What model is the Quantum hard disk? Can you upload some pics of it as fitted in to the 500XP board?

I have taken some pictures of Sysinfo.
The board is detected by Sysinfo both RAM &SCSI!

The drive is set to SCSI ID=0. There is a 6pin flatcable connected to the drive and the dipswitches, so you can access the the drive settings externally. I tried also direct ID setting on the drive without the cable.

The drive is a Quantum Prodrive LPS. See picture.
This drive works in my A590

I will take some pictures this afternoon.

Here are some more pictures of the Supra 500XP & Quantum drive

I forgot to mention in the previous that the A500 has kickstart 1.3 and I'm using a WB 1.3 boot floppy.

All the best,
Mo

Isn't the Supra disk floppy install bootable? I know the A590 install disk is.

Have you tried booting from it and setting up the drive.

EDIT: Try using the A590 power supply instead of the Supra Power supply.

Thanks Arnie,

Can't find the original Supra bootfloppy.
I will transfer the Supra boot adf from my Gotek to a floppy when i'm home.
The PSU I'm using is from the A590 because it has the power sensing pin.

All the best,
Mo

I found a load of Supra boot/tools disks on the Amiga Hardware site. Is your disk A, B or C version?

I have finally booted with the Suprabootdisk v3.8B.
The result however is still the same. On the Supratools disk there were some Supra commands that I tried.
The result is in the pics.

After that I removed the Quantum drive and reseated IC1 to 4. And then i put the disk back.

I reconnected the Supra to the A500 and this time I was even further from home, only a white screen on the monitor: (

What is the function of the IC's 1 to 4? These are labelled 64-1A,64-2A, 64-3B & 64-4B.
Are these available?
I would like have this 500XP working again☺

All the best,
Mo

They are PALs, which is essentially custom logic. If they are bad, it is over- there is no way to make new ones unless someone has a copy of the original logic programming.
