What the hell did I buy?!?
On the lookout for an Amiga 220V power supply on tha internets, I stumbled upon one on Fleabay for a pretty decent price.
I bought it and I received something which I am not certain where it came from ![]() The power supply in question is an Amiga 500 one, but the bloody thing weighs A TON, I think more than my A1200. What troubles me is, that it has 2.5A on the 5V line. What the fuck? I thought A500 PSUs had 4.5A. My 110V PSU has 4.5A on the 5V and it's as light as a feather. So, what the hell did I buy,and is anyone willing to trade it for a light one? I can't travel with so much weight! For the time being, will this work in my expanded A1200 or will I fry something?> My A1200 has an 030@50 and now I am replacing the HD with a CF card. |

Hmmm strange.... I wonder if the plastics have been changed on that PSU ? anyway that 2.5Amp is pretty much gonna be eaten by the Accelerator and mobo... you may experience difficulties when accessing disk HDD / FDD why not look at a Pico PSU ? thats 120wats with 8 amps on the +5 and 10 amps on the +12... small easy to hack and light as a feather ![]() |

Not sure about the output, but my A500 "brick" PSUs outweigh an A600 by somewhere around 2kg...they aren't light!

indeed, that an a 120watt laptop plug pack (for around £15-20) you would need to hack it a smidgeon... infact you could probably use the PSU housing to put the plug pack AND the Pico PSU, and then hack in the 5pin cable without to much fuss.. hows your hacking skills? |

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/diamond-PSU...Q3amesstQQtZkm you then connect one of these to the PIC, and with very simple hackery viola you have anything upto a 120watt PSU ![]() |

@Akira,
you bought the same PSU as the two I have. They are from A500, heavy type P/NO> 312503-03. One is made in W. Germany, and the other one is form Singapore. The outputs are 2.5A on 5V, 1.0A on 12V and 0.1A on -12V. I'm using it for my A500 and A1200, but all of them are without accelerator, only with ram expansion. The light A500 PSU I have has 3.0A on 5V, 0.1A on 12V and 0.1A on -12V. But the small A1200 PSU I have (witch doest work anymore ![]() It's interesting that you have 4.5A on 12V on light PSU and mine light A500 and A1200 has got only 3.0A on 5V. Hope this helps a little bit. |

The better thing you can do is buy a baby- AT (AT PSU in small form-factor) and hack it inside the original brick case.
You need to use the original lead+"square" connector, of course. Those "baby" AT have (at least) 8A in the +5V line and a lot of current in the +12V line. Don't know how to make it? Look at Stedy's page: http://www.ianstedman.co.uk/Amiga/am..._supplies.html |

Maybe a notebook switching 110-220V PSU is best. What about this "Pico"? Does it do 110V/220V? Automatically? I am really interested in its small size... Would it be hard to make it work with an Amiga or would it just be a matter of connecting the right cables where they should go? |

PicoPSU operates with 12V DC, so to use you'll need laptop PSU (to get 12V) as Zetr0 already had suggested.

I don't understand shit.
I need Pico PLUS a laptop PSU? Or can I use just a laptop PSU? please clue me in. I have just powered up the Amiga with the heavy A500 brick and so far it's working OK, but I would like to get a better PSU ASAP. |

The input for PicoPSU is 12V DC, and then it makes all other voltage from that 12V. So to use PicoPSU you need power adapter from 110/220V AC to 12V DC - Zetr0 suggested to use laptop PSU. You can't only use laptop PSU because it outputs only one voltage (the voltage depends upon laptop type) and for Amiga you need 12v, 5V,-12V.
Hope now you'll understand. |

That explains it.
I thought PicoPSU would connect straight into the wall with a cable. Shit. |

Did you get a Commodore 128 PS? They look identical, but they do not have a switch on them...

with Z's help, I did a picoPSU mod on my A1200 , it works just great!
I used the 120W version, and an 80W 12v tranformer (to be sure, this amiga has a 1230/50-64MB, dce flickermagic, 2.5" HDD and an idefix express) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
