Amiga 1200 or 600 hear me out....

Hey all,

I haven't had an Amiga for many many years, and then I buy 2!

I was looking for ages and then purchased an Amiga 600, it arrived and I tested it all out, the keyboard wasn't working properly so I cleaned up the socket and it woked again, it came with a 30mb HDD from factory and has a floppy drive, there were a lot of games on floppy but only about half worked. I noticed one of the capacitor pads was dull so I promptly sent the motherboard off to Retro Passion for a recap. I purchased a Furia, 3.1 ROM and IDE2SD adaptor.

In the back of my mind I always wanted the powerhouse that was the A1200 so I managed to find one, it has a CF card and 3.1 ROMs but I didn't spot an expansion so I started to look at the expansion options and found there wasn't much at a decent price, so now I don't know if I should keep the 600 with the ECS chipset of keep the AGA 1200 chipset????

Help!

If there can only be one, keep the A1200.

Thanks grond,

Can I ask why you would pick the 1200 over an accelerated 600? This is the dilema I am facing and I would like to know the benefit of 1 over the other?

It all depends of your needs. I like both machines for different reasons. I have Blizzard 030 in A1200 and Furia in A600. Would not trade any of them for anything in this world

There are lots of expansions for the A1200 ranging from fast memory (which in the A1200 already gives a significant processor speed boost) to a Vampire. All these expansions connect reliably to the mainboard while the connection of any A600 accelerators to the processor is quite flaky and error prone. The A1200 has the AGA chipset and thus the largest catalogue of software that can run on it. It has a 32 bit chipmem interface so that some programs run faster on it than they ever could on an A600. The A1200 has the full-size keyboard which doesn't only look nicer but can actually be useful for some programs. The A1200 case has more room for stuff to put in it and doesn't overheat as easily if you do. The PCMCIA slot of the A1200 is considered to be slightly more compatible than the earlier A600 PCMCIA slot.

I think you should keep the A600 and I can help you get rid of the A1200!

I was never a fan of the A600 although I can see why people do like them. I like the number pad on the other machines. I have an A1200 and an A500. I have never felt the need for anything else. I have upgraded both as far as I need including accelerators, goteks and CF cards.

I am already coming round to the idea! If only the add on cards were a little bit cheaper

A600 for me made a cute project, I had an ACA630 and Indivision ECS, was a nice tidy little setup but I still prefer an A1200 any day of the week, with a Blizzard 1230 you pretty much have the perfect Amiga (IMHO)

I quite like the size of the 600, I was never a big fan of it when it came out originally though, those were the days that I had an Amiga 500!

The A1200 showed up today and I think I have done really well! It is lovely and white and in great shape, caps will need to be done at some point though.

Today.

Recap it today!

Seriously, the longer you leave it, the greater the chance of damage.
It's not a case of *if* there'll be damage, just, *when* will it happen.
