A4000: story of replacing broken SIMM sockets
A friend gave me his A4000 to do things, and turned out it has got all its SIMM sockets broken in a way they no longer were able to keep memory modules in place. A smart system of brackets crafted of paper clips was used, but didn't prove itself to be 100% secure.
So a bunch of angled 72-pin sockets was ordered on Mouser. After they arrived the last really difficult thing was to make myself finally face 360 pins - first to desolder, then to solder back For desoldering, a combo of a vacuum pump and soldering iron was used. Works great for all pins except those connected to copper polygons, so a hot air station came in handy. Care was taken to not overheat traces and pads, as well as to not scratch or damage tracks. Not much A4000 motherboards are produced these days. After all old sockets are removed, a few pads were given a bit of additional cleaning using wooden toothpicks, solder wick and flux. Then it all is a matter of putting new sockets in place, starting with Bank 0 (Chip RAM). A4000 happily boots with only 2M of Chip RAM. Time to solder remaining sockets. Tada! All 16MB of Fast RAM visible. Mission accomplished Last edited by tnt23; 06 August 2013 at 08:52. |
