Picasso II Support

I've installed ClassicWB ADVSP on my Amiga 2000HD w/GVP 030/50 accelerator. Seems a little on the slow side, but I think my problem may be the display mode its using. I have a flicker fixer and a Picasso II card, is there another driver that I need to load / install to take advantage of the cards acceleration?

you must install either picasso96 or CGX to "activate" the picassoII so it gets used in workbench/apps.... it will be quite faster than the chipset gfx in wb....

The ADVSP will run slow on an ECS native chipset, as it's much slower than AGA in higher colour screenmodes.

Picasso will speed everything up nicely.

Got it installed, and it looks nicer, but the speed still isn't quite there. Each time I open a drawer I have to wait for the icons to draw themselves. A similar config under WinUAE dosen't behave that way.

I checked that use RTG was on in newicons prefs. Any other suggestions?

Have you disabled FBlit? (under the top menubar ->tools->FBlit). It might be clashing with the Picasso.

Those newicons in the ADVSP, although slower than the normal ones in ADV and below, should be ok with your speed processor and Picasso I would have thought.

Disabling FBlit made no noticeable difference in speed.

Its not so much the machine is slow - its the amount of time it takes to draw all the icons when each drawer is opened. Takes 6 - 8 seconds to open. Hard drive flashes away as each icon is drawn. Execution speed of apps are quick, as fast as WinUAE configured the same as this machine anyhow.

Wonder if its just something I have to deal with or move to the ADV version.

Defrag your HD. The head of your HD is jumping all over the place trying to read the .info icon files.

It's always going to be slower than WinUAE when it comes to reading icons as the hard drive access is much slower on a real Amiga.

WinUAE with JIT is several time faster than a real Amiga at opening drawers and icons - it will never be instant like you see in the emulator.

It shouldn't be excessively slow however with Picasso and an 030. I have no way of testing that pack on an ECS machine outside of WinUAE, so I'm out of ideas.

EDIT: I've uploaded a video showing icon speed in WinUAE with ECS, a fast CPU and no JIT. How much slower is it than that?

If it's only slower by a couple of seconds, it's probably the normal speed on a real Amiga.

Yup thats just about right - maybe even a little faster on my 030 / 50.

So overall P96 does nothing to improve that speed, but thats perfectly fine.

Thanks a bunch for taking the time to upload that vid.

No problem, just goes to show how much we're spoiled these days with emulation performance.

The bottleneck must be the hard drive access reading the info files, plus NewIcons have to be rendered by the CPU which slows things down slightly. However, P96 with your card allows you to bypass the 16 colour limitation of the ECS chipset and enjoy nice flicker free high res workbenches.

So in a way, you are getting quite a performance increase considering the amount of colours and resolution used! Amiga native chipsets always tended to slow down in higher colour and resolution formats.

Decided to try the ADV version instead, and its still just as slow.

Oh well, I'm still really happy with it now.
