A1200 HDD Boot Issue!

I've just installed my hard drive into my newly aquired A1200 and it refuses to boot! It has Amigasys 4 AGA installed along with WB 3.1 in a seperate partition and WHDLoad + games etc.. (using SFS by the way).

This is what i get when the A1200 goes to boot from the HDD (i have 2mb chip and 16mb fast ram installed with 40mhz 030 processor):

Does anyone know what could be wrong? Cheers

I have seen that error myself recently, but I can't remember exactly what caused it.

Did you prepare the hard drive under WinUAE or on another A1200?

Is there any chance that the hard drive is trying to execute software which requires an '040 or above processor?

BTW, whatever did cause my error, it was easily fixed.

It was not prepared by myself (i can't be arsed ) and i think it was done through WinUAE. I don't think it's expecting a 030 processor as it's supposed to be the same HDD setup i had on my other C= A1200.

When hard drives are prepared on WinUAE, care must be taken to use the same device for HDToolbox as used by the real Amiga, i.e. scsi.device and not uaescsi.device, IIRC.

I will ask the guy and find out. I've used him a couple of times to prepare A1200 and A600 HDD's for me as i cannot be bothered and there's usually never any problems Would the scsi device issue come up with those messages?

I don't know, as I have no experience of using disks which have been prepared on WinUAE. It was just a guess based on what you said about how the disk had been prepared.

I just wish I could remember the circumstances which gave me the same error message.

Have you tried a warm reboot, i.e. Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga?

First check that fast ram is working, what does "avail" show? and what about "info"? Do you get same results if you boot without startup-sequence?

No. There is not much difference unless you want to test >4G issues under WinUAE. (and it is uaehf.device, not uaescsi.device)

Thanks for the replies

I've managed to boot to WB 3.1 by selecting HD1 from the A1200's boot menu. I only run into the error when i selct HD0 from the boot menu (I'm sure this is the Amigasys partition).

Anyway here are more screenshots showing more info...

SFS is incorrectly installed. It should say SFS0, not CFS0 in boot menu. (but it may not be the reason for out of memory message)

I have no idea whats wrong? I can get the 3.1 partiton to boot but not Amigasys 4 HD2 partiton says "not bootable" and i don't know what it contains? oh and the hard drive is 6.5gb although i don't know how much of that space is actually being used

Guaranteed 4G limit issue. CF was clearly installed using uaehf.device which fully supports >4G drives. KS 3.1 (or older) built-in scsi.device is dangerous to use if any partition is fully or partially outside of first 4G.

Your CF setup is bad. (wrong dostype, >4G used without patches). At least it was setup using uaehf.device. Real Amiga or IDE emulation install without 4G patches would have been really dangerous, last partition would have been visible but sooner or later whole drive would have gotten corrupted because two partitions shared same disk blocks..

Thomas can explain this much better, I am too lazy to explain how to properly setup Amiga HD

Toni is right, when selecting the filesystem in hdtoolbox, you need to alter the identifier beginning from 4 to 5, then it will report as SFS/00.
