THE Tool CHECK4GB.lha killed my CF CARD.

Ohh how sweet, just with a double click on the Icon
this tool
http://aminet.net/package/disk/misc/check4gb
killed my hole CF card...

it wont show up on HD toolbox anymore..
nothing.. even the option, change drive type, and read drive data,
wont help, nothing.

The CF is gone.

this is one of the sadest day´s in my amiga history

no kidding, just try to format the CF card on your PC and check what happen, and try to read it again on your amiga.

PS : can you specify which model of CD Card you used ?

Your CF card was formatted already or not when you applied the command ?

Next, it's better if the command is done on CLI (you see exactly what you're doing:

check4gb scsi.device 0

Format it ? ohh god.. 3 years of work .

It is a SANDISK 4GB Utlra Compact Flash 30MB/s

Next time ? i will never use that dawm tool again.

But thatnks for the help.
I will try using tools like toms
http://thomas-rapp.homepage.t-online.de/download.html

rerdb.lha
rdbrecov.lha

pretty much , all Rigid Disk Block rescure tools that i can get, but i think it´s to late already..

would be nice if tom could say something about that.

I was reading the "read me " file before using, and it only says " it checks if youre HD setup is 4gb ready".
Nothing about killing the hole drive !!!

But i guess thats the "try it on youre own RISK" part.

DAWM this tool, I HATE IT !!!

check4gb does not do any writes. It can't damage or destroy any data.

And what does "killed" means? If it does not even work in PC anymore (won't get detected, detected as wrong size, you get read errors when mounted in winuae etc..), then it simply died due to internal physical fault, nothing to do with check4gb.

EDIT: The very first step is to create full image of the CF first. (Use WinUAE or some other utility). If image creation fails: it is dead. If image creation succeeded: it works, start using recovery utilities to recover data.

I doubt that check4gb was the cause for the damage, too.

If HDToolbox does not see the drive in your Amiga, then other tools won't see it, either.

I'd do like Toni said, connect the card to a Windows PC with an USB card reader and see what the PC says.

Try to add it to WinUAE as a harddrive and make an image backup.

If WinUAE does not recognise its size, then run DiskPart, create a primary partition and delete it again, then try again with WinUAE.

Once WinUAE recognises it, HDToolbox should see it inside WinUAE, too. Then you can run ReRDB to repair what Diskpart damaged.

Hi Tom.

Yes, Check4GB killed my CF. No doubt about that. I double clicked it, saw the result....
(none of my drives where 4gb ready)
i made a reset... an BAAAM, dead (idefix was in the sartup-sequence)

Yep, no other tools will see it.

I guess i have to get a adaper and try the cf on the PC.

Yeah, no backup in 3 years, because its a pain to open up my Amiga setup.
But i guess, to loose the CF is even more of a pain.....

i wish i would have never used CHECK4GB , because i only need 2GB anyway ..... but i though, heck, why not... Silly nibbler !!!

No. Dying was just an accident. Any access at that time would have killed it. There is NO WAY to KILL (make it totally inaccessible) any drive or CF with standard driver software.

Question you still haven't answered: Get PC USB CF adapter, does Windows detect it? (=Does it appear in Windows disk management with correct size). Note that it does not appear in anywhere else and it is normal. Only in Disk Management. If Windows asks if you want to format it: Don't allow it.

It is not dead if it appears in Disk Management.

Don't use any Amiga programs to confirm it. Most of them only access drive in partition level. Corrupted partition table can make it nearly invisible to most Amiga programs.

Easier test (which may not 100% confirm it if there are other hardware problems): Does it appear in Amiga hdtoolbox as uninitialized? If it does: it is not dead.

I use the standard FFS.
Even if Check4GB dont killed the CF it is now complete unusable for the amiga.

I have to get a CF adapter, today.
Then i know if something have survived. ( hopefully )

And No tony. No Amiga Tool what so ever can localize the Card.
Is´like no CF card is there at all.

when i have the Adapter we know more, but "USE IT AT YOUR`E OWN RISK IS RIGHT

Ok. We can only hope it was your Amiga IDE port (not that nice either but probably better option than lost data) or adapter or cable or something like that that died instead of your CF card.

It wont let me even format it via PC.
I get only a blinking from the card reader and it locks up windows....
after waiting wor AGES... i tryed to format it....
windows just said, insert a memory card

So, like the title said, CHECK4GB killed my CF CARD.
Just great !!!.. and no, it worked perfect, then i double clicked CHECK4GB, made a reset a reset and the card is since dead

Screw this tool !!! nibbler is very , very sad !!!

I know its hard to belive but I think its more likely coincidence and the card just gave up.
I know the feeling not so long ago I picked up a virus that infected Loadwb, Iprefs etc I think from some old A-max disk from bbs - I just formated everything - not happy
Always keep backups!

Ever heard of backups? I think I have 2 sets at least and then some older sets, too. And have lost a CF, too, with invaluable photos, when on the road. No backup...

Thanks Boo Boo.
ohh, and i used the wrong Diskpart command.
the correct is "Diskpart list volumes"

But it make no difference....
when i use this option the card reader blinks for a long time in a certain rythm and then the CLI of MS-dos closes automaticly

so.. the card is dead.
BUT it had to be a funny coincidence , i mean, i use CHECK4GB and the CF is dead ?

NEVER AGAIN i will use this tool... ( and i will make backups in the future )
I curse this day and the stupid naive nibble.... ohh.. lets try this.....

no,,, i think i go the winuae route... it faster...

but all the collection and stuff....

JESUS CHRIST almighty HELP !!!!!!!!!!! a very very sad day for the Nibblonian´s

Very odd. Perhaps it has faulty contact inside or there is some firmware weirdness going on.

But immediately use WinUAE "Create harddisk image" option and create image of it. Then start with recovery using the image (better make copy of the image first too). DO NOT attempt to modify data on the CF card!
