As far as I remember (heheh) It was from the Gameboy version.

I think I remember this cos I was *convinced* it was the c64 and then ariston said it was the gameboy. Then again they could all be lying cos it sounded really like the C64.

Also have anyone heard the tunes by Bastian http://www.bastianmusic.com/ I think he's pretty big in the netherlands (well they played it on the radio a lot). Lots of c64 stuff and one of the tracks (can't rember which one) had the cool wop-wop noise off (I think) the Rubicon soundtrack.

I was listening to loading music of Lotus 2, and yes, one tune (the one from Twilight / level 2 IIRC) is VERY similar to "Waiting for the night to fall" Depeche mode title

DM title: [ Show youtube player ]

Lotus 2 tune: jingle6.zip

I just noticed that after 30 years listening to both songs... But maybe wrong thread as this Lotus tune is a blatant ripoff of the DM tune. Should be moved? I'm sure there's a similar thread about that too.

One of the Amon Amarth songs contains a passage that is very, very similar to the Out Run theme. On the other hand - I am not sure, if the tune in Out Run was original

Not sure what came first, probably Shadow Fighter track and I detest the Red Hot Chilli peppers enough to not know when this song came out but there is a bass line in this song from Shadow fighter track (17 seconds in) [ Show youtube player ] sounds very similar to the Chilli peppers (got to 32 seconds in)

What about this demo tune, starts at 3:30?

[ Show youtube player ]

I swear I've heard it somewhere else, long before the demo. Is it a rip?

I wonder does John Carpenter know someone ripped him off from the great Assault on Precinct 13 theme music? I know that's a game borrowing from a movie instead of the other way around but who cares

Sounds like it's sampled from Trancesetters - Secrets of Meditation (Shi-Take Mix); remembered from Carl Cox's FACT mix (CD 1, track 3, 3m37s)

Probably sampled from the original mix, as the track starts with just the vocal bit more isolated

There are more sampled parts in Pulse demo. Do you recognize the rest? Like that underwater part in 2:10 ?

Shocking!

I've known PC demos that were disqualified at demoparties for ripping samples and so forth, but Pulse won 1st place in the Assembly '97 Amiga Demo compo with no issues! What's with that, eh?

Well... Yes and no. Sampling is common and accepted technique of composing (or recomposing) in electronic music. But such discoveries may be disappointing if we assume it as original compositions. Ganja sampled a lot. I don't condemn anyone. I'm just interested in their sources.

There is similar and interesting thread with more examples of games and demos sound origins. There is also another NVX demo mentioned

Aye could be, but that doesn't have the airy chord pattern in it @ 3:48

1997 being the key factor here, things were different 24 years ago, it wasn't as easy to find where samples came from as it is in 2021. So unless someone at the party itself recognized the samples (and told the organizers about it), nobody really cared.

The phrase "What the H*ll" from The Terminator movie was later used in an North-European Megademo production, don't remember their scene name, but the demo had a man sleeping in a bed, a window got smashed, the man woke up and said the sample "What the H*ll" and he was walking to the window with an shotgun.

People also assumed that some references are obvious, like music in Switchback or 3D Demo II etc.
