Disaster!

Hi! Im relativley new to the amiga, just bought myself an amiga 500 and was happily formatting a pile of 720KB disks when somehow my workbench disk got corrupted (It shows up as Df0:BAD). Im distraught as it was my only copy.

HOWEVER, i have sim city disk that boots to a workbench desktop.

My question is, given these conditions, could i use a program like Amiga Explorer to write an ADF of a workbench disk to the amiga?

@Rheffera

Welcome to the EAB, theres plenty of retolicious mischief to getup to when you get some time to kick back and relax.

so lets see about the problem...

the short answer is "indeed, yes you can."

you will still need to get the "AmigaExplorer" over onto the amiga in question

there are many ways, by using a small telnet program and setup a telnet ftp service on the PC.

theres more to read here

good luck

so long as the disk has the "type" command, you could use adf sender terminal.

Works something like:
type ser: to ram:transdisk

then use trackdisk to write a new WB image through ADF Sender.

More info from
Code:

Hope this helps.

@Zetro
I am not sure that the FTP method will work with an a500 (no TCP stack). Amiga Explorerer still relies on the "type" command. IMHO, Amiga Explorer is the better option. It allows for a lot more functions.

If you have a disk that boots into workbench, then you can use the Amiga Explorer route. It copies automatically the files needed to the Amiga side without the need to set up any additional things. Try it out.

This is a good point, but i believe ppill's HOMBRE' project allows for serial term program. its awesome!

Only if the disk has the type command (some games won't). For an A500, the null modem route has to be taken. For AE to work, you have to first send a file. In the AE setup wizard (For Null modem), it instructs you to type:
"type SER: to RAM:Setup"

After the Setup file is sent and run, AE works well. It still relies on the "type" command tho.

@Zetro
Yes Hombre is a good project and works well. It may be a bit confusing for a new Amiga user tho...

Thanks everyone, ill try it out.
But umm..when the game boots to workbench there is no cli icon or anything.

I press ctrl+D to break into DOS while booting and i try the command:

Type Ser: to Ram:setup

but it tells me "Cant open SER:"

Any more ideas? il ltry a few more games disks i got with my amiga and see if any accept the command.

Perhaps the disk is missing the serial.device????? (also required for null modem transfers)
What are you using to transfer files (PC side)? If you are using ADF Sender Terminal then the command is slightly different (you also need the transdisk program from the ADF Sender Terminal website)

"type ser: to ram:transdisk"

For SER: to work you need to have a port-handler file in L: (and if I remember correctly serial.device in DEVS:). Maybe it's not on that game disk?

Thanks for the kind words regarding Hombre. Haven't been working on it for a while now... but that's about to change :) I have the next three weeks off so should be able to improve the package somewhat. Docs are first on the list then pull-down menus (SHWEET).

Hope they don't cost you an arm and a leg! If I where you, I'd make a few backup copies as soon as you get them, as there is nothing more frustrating than having your only copy get corrupted.
