HD Dead?
Hello all, when reviving my (t)rusty old A600, I noticed that the HD wouldn't boot (heck, the last time I booted it was, what, 10 years ago?).
Now the funny thing with this HD is that - it spins up - it rattles like it's doing something - it doesn't boot - it keeps the HDD led on continuously. Is this drive dead? It's a Quantum go-drive, IIRC a 120Mb model. At the moment, I can't find my old Workbench floppies anywhere, so all I have to look at at the moment is the purple "flying floppy" screen. |

It reboots and does the same thing again, the HDD light just stays on.
I remember that the HDD didn't spin up in time for the system to start booting off the HDD, so I had to do that all the time anyway... |

Well I finally found my old 2.5"->3.5" connector thingy back and I've got loads of 3,5" discs laying around, so I'll give one of those drives a shot to see whether it's the HD, or whether the IDE bus just failed on me

update
Well, here's an update.
Found my 2.5"->3.5" adapter cable, and using an external power supply I hooked up 5 different 3.5" harddisks, capacities ranging from 200Mb - 17.9 Gb. Booted Workbench and HDToolbox, but regardless of type, size and jumper setting, neither of them showed up in the HDToolbox screen. The problem of the HDD-led always being on was eliminated with those other harddisks, and as the HDD-led was blinking at start-up, something appeared to be happening. But as said, none showed up in HDToolbox. I can remember the pre-boot screen you get in when you press both mouse buttons at start-up, but as I don't have a working mouse at the moment I can't get there to see what settings there are in this screen. Any suggestions, anyone? Any verdict on the status of the IDE-bus? Anything I'm doing REALLY wrong? |

Have you checked that the cable is connected correctly to A1200 IDE port? Pin 1 to pin1 etc. where Pin 1 normaly is marked on the IDE cable (red or black line)

Do I need to get in that pre-boot menu to change settings? |

Did you check that HDToolbox is actually scanning your IDE bus ? Perhaps the tooltypes settings were changed earlier and now it does not check scsi.device. There should be one tooltype reading SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=scsi.device and there should be no brackets around it. Or, if you are using OS3.5 or higher, try the ASKDEVICE tooltype.

Click the HDToolbox icon once, then choose Icon -> Information from the menu.
But IIRC, the HDToolbox of WB2.0 could not be configured, so ignore my comment. |

Also found out I ran WB3.0 (I borrowed the disks from a friend of mine). Currently it says: SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=df0:/devs/gvpscsi.dev (which is probably the configuration of the friend I borrowed the disks from...) So there's something wrong anyway. I'm changing it into SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=scsi.device now and I'll see what happens... |

Yay, I got it to work!
It found the old Maxtor drive I connected to it, nicely read its configuration. So my IDE-bus is workely nicely, and my old Quantum 2,5" HD has gone to meet its maker.... Unfortunately I wasn't able to format the drive yet, but I'll have to wait for a mouse and my own WB2.05 discs as WB3.0 wouldn't install on my KS2.1... Thanks everyone for their input and suggestions! My Amiga's on the road again!! |
