A3000 Floppy DF0 refuses to become DF1
Ola,
In my A3000D, I have an Chinon FB-354 (DD) floppydrive as DF0 and a GOTEK as DF1. Motherboard Jumper is set to "DF1" and both units work perfectly. (when only one drive is in use, that jumper should be set to NoDF1) I would like to swap them so that the Gotek becomes DF0 and the Chinon becomes DF1. Can't get it to work On the Chinon, there is a 6-pin jumper header cluster thingamagic thingy. On the board there is a silkscreen explaining the various DS0 to DS3 positions. The default is "DS0 shorted" (obviously). The Gotek is set to DS1 making it DF1. The Chinon is on the right of the case (looking from the front) and is attached to the end of the floppy-cable (which has the "4/6 pin twist" just before it). The GOTEK is connected to the "middle" connector and is in the left FDD bay. With the GOTEK jumpered to DS0, I can set the Chinon's jumper to any of the DS1 to DS3 positions and it does not make a difference. The Chinon remains DF0. Always. Always. Booting AmigaTestKit, when running the readtest for DF0, the Chinon, jumpered to DS1 or anthing other than DS0, starts reading the floppy??? When doing the read-test for DF1 (Gotek), the Chinon again starts reading the floppy I wired the 3000D up in the exact same way as my A4000T: GOTEK on the middle connector and set to DS0 and the real floppy attached to the end (with the twist) and set to DF1. There it works perfectly. The 4000T does not care to which connector which drive is attached. It determines DF0 and DF1 solely based on jumpers. I'm lost in Floppy-lala-land |

Swap the order on the floppy cable. DF0: on the end. FYI A TRS-80 has the same order with drive 0 on the end of the chain and drive 1-3 before it.

How? Hmmm It must use "the twist" at the end of the cable I guess otherwise how can it know with a straight, non twisted cable. |

[QUOTE=StompinSteve;1602121]Are you saying that the A3000D determines who is DF0 and DF1 by means of position on the cable? (and the jumpers on the devices must match I assume).
the twist is drive select df0: or df1: |

The jumpers and the twist should match. The drive set to DS0 goes on the end after the twist. Assuming an Amiga floppy cable is used with 4-6 twisted.

Funny how the A4000T does not care about which drive goes where. The jumpers and only the jumpers on both drives decide. |

Yep, the inuse/motor/ready logic is subtly different in the A3000, which might result in you needing to match the select and inuse signals.
The A4000 will have incorrectly working drive LEDs if you don't match them (depends on the mechanism), but the drives will work. |

Then got a cable custom made by AmigaKit which the correct lengths and the twist and since then, no funky floppy LED circus anymore and HD in DF1 works fine too. |

Yep, so not fully interchangeable on the A4000 either, since the ready pulse generation for a HD drive gets messed up if you have the wrong drive select mechanism on the wrong connector.
Better just go with the rule of thumb that DS0 goes after the twist. |

Update and closing statement: physically swapped the two drives, modified their jumpers and now all is good. The Gotek is now DF0 and the floppydrive has become DF1.
