ONE Power Supply for TWO amigas
Could you use a ATX power supply to feed TWO Amigas?
If so, how would you go on to hook that up using switches for one or both turned on/off. Could you leave GND and -12 as "Always ON" and use a 2-pole switch for +5 & +12 , or how would that work/not work out? Last edited by tFt; 14 October 2021 at 15:57. |

Use relay(s) to manage power and with single switch you can control multiple voltages at once.

There is a ready-made product for that, even.

But 100 Euro for a power supply.....kinda high up there for a cheap bastard like me But for the "Technical Curiosity" please go on people....tell us how they did it, Relays as @pandy71 suggested? Or would a 3-pole switch do the even cheaper trick...leaving GND always connected. And can the -12V also be left connected, or what (possible) repercussions would that have? |

GND alone may be left connected. However leaving –12 V connected without providing also +12 V, may be harmful for audio op-amps, also damaging output audio capacitors by reverse polarization. Then, either use 3-pole switch or relays.

Currently there is plenty power switching solutions on market - single channel, multichannel, some power supervisors etc. But IMHO relay is simplest possible approach. Quote:
As already pointed by Krashan - GND can be connected and there is no problems there but constantly powered -12V line may create problems, personally i would avoid such state. |
