Occasional Red Screen Kiskstart 3.1
Hi,
I have bought Kickstart 3.1 (40.68) from Amigastore. I have Amiga 1200 with Hawk board which has 2MB Fast and 68882. It also has a 1.2GB Hard Disk with Workbench 3.1. Occasionally it will produce a red screen but only after pressing Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga to reboot. It does not do it every time. I have checked things like seating them properly and bent pins. Is there anyway of checking the Roms from within the 1200 itself? My Kickstart 3.0 do not have this problem, could it be just bad Roms? Can you update the Roms from Workbench? I could probably live with it apart from some games reboot the amiga first which also sometimes produces the red screen. Scott |

Don't know what it is, but this happens to me as well.
I have 3.1 Roms from vesalia (+ACA1221, Indivision and CF-card as HD) |

The KS does a quick checksum of the ROM on boot and displays RED if the checksum doesn't match. If it only occasionally gives a red screen it could be bad connection either on the ROM socket or the accelerator card / CPU socket. It could be a slow EPROM. They should be at least 120ns but they did make 150ns 27C400 chips. These are too slow but sometimes work. Usually on cold boot they work better than when they have warmed up.

Also, things may happen when ROM is mapped in RAM, right?

Thanks for this, I will check the connections again and which kind of EPROM they have used and then if no good I will contact Amigastore,
Kind regards Scott |

Checked the chips after carefully peeling back the sticker but no model number etc on them. They have at least sun blocked the windows so they're not wiped. Interestingly I have just booted up and done a few soft resets and ok at the moment - I will warm it up a bit first with TFX or Breathless and have a play. If it keeps happening I will get my dad to put them on some new chips (He's good at that sort of thing as he built us an EPROM board that we could plug into our Atari 800xl cartridge slot and swap the chips for each game).
I have bought and Atari 800xl too last year and also he fixed my Spectrum +3 which I got for £15 from a radio rally. |

Looks like it might be the slow EPROMS as happening again once warmed up - I'll take them out and get dad to move them onto new chips and see if that is the problem
