If you use XAD libraries, you don't need anything, just click on the RAR archive to turn it into a folder.

The only problem is that XAD doesn't support modern RAR 5 archives, in this case you have to use UnRAR, here is the procedure

Action Click-m-Click:
"AmigaDOS" C:UnRAR x {f}

Tick on:
CD Destination
Do All Files

Custom Buttons:
"AmigaDOS" C:UnRAR x {f}
CD Destination
Output Windows
Do All Files

In 2005 the 68k UnRAR executable was 93k. This version is 1.4MB. Can we say 'bloat'?

I don't know why people still use RAR. At least in Amiga world it isn't a good choice if you want that people can easily depack archives.

@Bruce Abbott

"Unrar-68k" was not really 93k, but 194K, the executable is compacted with "StoneCracker".

Today with "unrar-68k" you don't do anything with it anymore, all new archives RAR are based on WinRAR 5 not supported by old UnRAR.

This version of WinRAR is "Multiplatform" and supports all new RAR formats.

@daxb

RAR Archives do not belong to the Amiga world but it is one of the most used archives on the Web, so it is only fair that Amiga can unpack them too.

What would be the problem with using RAR Archives on the Amiga?

RAR Archives compress more than LHA or ZIP and on Amiga they unzip without problems.

In User-Startup you have to assign AmiTCP for example

Assign AmiTCP: "SYS:Internet/Genesis".

If you don't use this connection method you can simply write this:

Assign AmiTCP: RAM:

I attached a small Video Tutorial that shows the Click-m-Click Action:

If you have not configured a "FileTypes" you must add it from the "New" Tab adding the various parameters shown in the Video.

"AmigaDOS" C:UnRAR x {f}

Tick on:
CD Destination
Do All Files
Output Windows
Rescan Desination

If you use XAD libraries leave empty "Action LMB Double-Click" otherwise unpacking in folder will not work !

Fair enough.

We don't have a program to create them, and probably never will because the format is proprietary and not open source.

Except for the possible problem of not having enough memory. At 1.4MB it is useless for floppy disks and close to useless for a machine with less than 2MB free RAM. It may compress a bit more, but will that make up for the bloated executable?

True you can't create RAR archives but as said it is important to be able to unpack them since RAR archives are very popular on the Web.

For RAM we have to think about modern Amigas and not old Amigas that still use the floppy. Usually RAR archives include things that do not belong to the basic Amiga, see porting etc..

It's handy to have any unpacker on Dopus as anything I want to try is always downloaded and stored in my test folder, so whatever it's compressed with you don't have to quit out of emulator to unpack ;-)

If you're creative about it, you can split UnRAR executeable to 2 disks, then have it joined into RAM. The using the same script you could then unarchive whatever .rar files you want to. I've invented many different creative ways of handling files, and archives with my A4000 CSPPC. But I haven't used those methods in many years.

AmigaAMP meant to only be used if your machine is a 68zer60 (I don't pronounce 0 as 'oh' as it's not a letter) or PPC. So, UnRAR, I've suggested for years is best for Amigas with the RAM and CPU power. Personally, wouldn't really consider it for floppy use; keeping it strictly for HDD or CDs. LZX is another a I really prefer, LhA isn't one of my favorites since LZX was released.

I concur, it's great to have the ability to use UnRAR and newer features. To me, it's really good for large files, large archiving. I use DOPus 4 and 5 exclusively for all archiving/extracting. Even for OS 4, because the Unarc is really slow compared to stand alone CLI executeables.

No need to break it in two, UnRAR can be compressed with CrunchMania and get an 865KB executable and can be copied to an 878KB Floppy FFS.

Or compress with LZX which will become 844KB and then unpack it on HD
