Question Best Filesystem?

Just wondering what the best filesystem is to use on an actual Amiga, i.e. Is there anything better than FastFileSystem and do I want to use Directory Caching and International Mode?

Cheers

There's much better than FFS, mainly SFS and PFS, SFS is free....

Directory caching is a waste of harddrive space, as for international mode, forget it... the only time you might need it if for foreign games and they'll come on international mode dms/adf's anyway

the big (officially a) bonus (but really a drawback) with FFS is the valadation of dodgy partitions, it was ok for upto 540Mb harddrives that were split into 3 or 4 partitions, but on a 2gig partiion it takes bloody ages...

you best bet is SFS, keep a partition empty and unmounted (or it's too tempting) that is equal to you largest partition, just in case sfs naffs up (I had it do it once in 3+ years and then it was my fault)...

This may have been an isolated incident, but I had issues with SFS on my Workbench partition. Cold boots almost always crashed while loading - a warm reset was ok.

Hence I've settled for FFS for the boot partition and SFS for data partitions. Workbench can be easily reformatted (it's only about 15mb) if FFS does decide to churn up the partition.

I am talking about a real Amiga btw, not Emulated.

Alright, so does anyone know if its possible to convert the filesystem without losing everything or am I stuck?

So am I, isn't my A4000/060/50 128Mb/PicassoIV with 40Gig of SFS partitions real enough for you?

no you can't convert the filesystem
you need to set it up in hdtoolbox - reset - bye bye previous partition
but if you can empty one partition into the others, that should at least get you started so you don't have to sacrifice too much...

if you use something like Diavolo to backup you shouldn't lose anything

but it depends on your setup, how big your harddrive is, how many partitions, how much you have jammed on them, whether it's already compressed etc...

erm, if you say so.

But the thing is that it is the picture I intended to use before I remade the one I have now.

The man on NS avatar is comedian/artist/painter Peter Wahlbäck who did the "Musik für alles" "tv für alles" and "Kalender für alles", where I got my nick from a character he used.

The character on his avatar is "tabbac man" during the x-mas holiday.

...just a little worthless knowing on the side of the topic

well, I posted it here the first time I made my apperence some time ago in the off-topic section, then the whole section was deleted. I still got it on my homepage I think, under the "how gay are you" picture gallery.

Anyway, it's fun to see it again. Made me laugh to see that old picture been put to use.

it's http://kombatsanta.cjb.net

Still under construction though... no main page yet so you can navigate neatly... but the things that are working at the moment is

http://kombatsanta.cjb.net/gallery

and

http://kombatsanta.cjb.net/files

Someday I will finish it... I'm just sooo lazy and I don't want it to be something ugly or usual-looking. Planning to do something gothic, dark, twisted and sick. it should be something more like an abstract experiance like visiting a David Lynch dream or something... I dunno, we'll se what happens

edit: oh, did a phpbb forum(blablabla/forum) just for testing purposes also.. don't think I'll keep it though. Will be replaced with a simple guest book.

God, I wish I had some motivation to actually do something

Hey thanks man! nice little site there, to bad the forum was shitty.

I've got loads of party pictures(well, I think that's the only pictures I've got really ) so be sure to have a look in the future for pictures from Roskilde, Arvika and other festivities from our little party community.
