WHDLoad client for bouncing ball game Pop-Up

Hi,

it would be really great if someone had time and knowledge to make a WHDLoad install for the game Pop-Up.

Here's the HOL link: http://hol.abime.net/1109

Some years ago somebody started an attempt already but it seemingly led to nowhere: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?p=815594

20 years ago I used to play this a lot and would love to give this a new try on my CD32.

If anybody would start this I can provide an disk image of the original disk and other help which is needed.

PS
It exists a cracked version of this game. Once I got this started on my A1200 with relokick. The real cool thing there is, there was a crack intro in which you could select the beginning level. This is unfortunately not provided by the original game. There you have always to start in level 1. Maybe a future WHDLoad installer could have a starting level option too?

I would like to ask if in the meantime any of you WHDLoad devs would maybe take the time to write an install for this game?

I could create and send you an raw image of the original disk if that would help.

You should put the image in the zone for backup, then maybe some will grab it also

Like kriz said please create an image of the original and upload it It will be preserved on the file server and hopefully one day somebody will write a WHDLoad slave for it.

Thank you I've added it to the file server in 'Non TOSEC Games/Disk'.

I've got a working patch. This game has some rather quirky code! I've stripped out the few OS calls it does (mostly the game trashes the OS, but still uses it very slightly to get started). It fails outright on any 32-bit memory machine due to misuse of an address register. That was fixable at least.

There's a fair bit I still want to do - particularly rewriting a rather gnarly loading routine. But I might be able to send a beta your way soon.

As promised, I have uploaded an alpha version of the install to TheZone.

It is NOT finished! I want to support saving levels in the editor (probably with a slot system, similar to what I did for Manix), and will also add trainers for starting level (as requested) and infinite lives/power-ups. Then make icons/installer/etc.

But it is working well enough that you can try it out. And let me know if the game itself is broken.

You don't need any Kickstart ROM - I patched the OS calls as there weren't many. The game also had a nasty segment loader that wouldn't have played nicely if PRELOAD was turned off, so I have now rewritten it entirely.

Hi DJ Mike,

Many thanks, I will try it Tonight on my A500 ACA500PLUS (68000) and on my A1200 GVP TURBO+II 68030 @ 40 MHz.
I will send you my feedback

Hi DJ Mike,

I just finished to test Your Alpha installation.

Under WinUAE (68030 OS 3.5) and on my A1200 (68030) all works correctly.

On my A500ACA500PLUS (68000 OS 3.1.4.1), I have a message Error Directly when I click on the Icon

I add my GlowIcon and the WHDLoad's Report

I also have a question... Is it possible to use Disk.1 structure file instead of real files as they are not compatible with PC?
This would be easier for the transfer because I usually do my installations under WInUAE before transferring them to my different Amigas.

Here, Your LHA file has been decompressed directly in Workbench and in all cases (Amigas)

I know Infograme usually used this method to annoy hackers.

I add in The zone a LHA file with the full game's installation too.

Best regards,

Pascal

The install will be real files - there's no sense in using Disk.1 because I would only have to emulate AmigaDOS file access if I did that! I might be able to rename the files in the installer, then ignore the extra '.' when loading the files. (I think WHDLoad may even already have support for this, but I might be misremembering.)

The A500 error is a rookie error on my part reading a word on an odd-numbered memory address. I have put a fixed version in TheZone.

Hi DjMike, great that you are working on this installer!

I'm on vacation right now and looking forward to testing it out right after, towards the end of July.

Many thanks for that!

Finished install is attached. It works fine for me testing on a real A1200/030 but please send me any issues and I am happy to take a look.

Files from the disk that have a trailing "." will be renamed if you use the installer. However I made the patch compatible with the original filenames too.

EDIT: Removed attachment as succeeded by later one.
