I assume by isometric you mean a quasi-3D appearance, like Ultima 8 and the Avernum games have? In which case, yeah, not really possible on this particular system.

Old computers tend to have color limitations; the TI-99/4a has the advantage of no color limit but sacrifices flexibility at the pixel level by only allowing 2 colors for every 8 pixels horizontally. That makes isometric projection very tricky...

Yes, it is essentially still two-dimensional, the perspective is fixed, there is no vanishing point.

More modern games that use that projection are very rare, but some allow rotation (to see behind walls, instead of just making the wall momentarily transparent.)
It is the best perspective for RPGs and squad-based tacticals, IMO.

I understand that you are limited by the tech specs of your platform, and probably prefer the oldskool top-down anyway.

Good luck with your project. It looks to be of high calibre / quality!

Fargoal is pretty fun, even the vintage version... I definitely want to write a game like it for the TI, my "roguelike" for the platform. But that can wait, ONE project at a time...

I did start up coding again last night, have to write the player interface for combat. That's a big hurdle. Target selection, option selection, logical assignment of tasks... lots to do there.

Impressive. Though the only TI I ever owned was a pocket calculator. They weren't so popular in my part of the woods.
