Floppy disk Amiga 500 Plus Surgery

Here are some pictures of my new Amiga 500 Plus undergoing battery removal surgery. I am pleased to say the operation was a success and the Amiga is now safe from evil battery leakage

The Amiga before undergoing surgery

No signs so far

OK, here goes nothing... Fingers crossed!

Thankfully there are no signs of severe leakage.

Upon closer inspection, there are signs of early leakage, so better to be safe than sorry, I proceed to remove the battery

I removed it by simply moving the battery lengthways gently, back and forth, until it was removed from the PCB. This only took a few minutes, then I cleaned what little traces were remaining from the board using a drip of vinegar and a cotton bud.

The board is now nice and clean, after reseating a few capacitors and checking all the chips are secure I start putting her back together.

The operation was a success and my Amiga is now up and running again, and I can relax [until my memory upgrade arrives..!]!

Nice!

My isn't technology great! - Seeing the lightweight LCD on top of the A500 brings back memories of my CRT monitor slowly crushing the life out of my poor A500!

I see a furry mess on the end of that battery just peeping out - good work it looks like you caught it just in time.
To be honest people should be whipping out original NiCads even if they're not leaking - they will go for sure!

Yes I'm glad there was no serious leakage, my heart was certainly pumping when I was removing the heat shield!

12 years after I last owned a classic Amiga and 15 years or so after I departed with my A500+, and I can still tell from a glance exactly which chips are where in the "overview" picture of the motherboard without peeking at the labels... Clearly my A500+ spent far too much time bare naked...

Pervert!

My A500 had one memory chip socketted so I could use it as a tester for memory chips.

I've noticed my setup is corrupting my disks, the speaker of the TV Monitor being too close to the disk drives :-( So I will have to do some adjusting, I've ordered a stand which will increase the distance and place a barrier.
