Extremely odd floppy drive problems....

Ok odd problem.

When I attach 2 floppys to my A2000 it doesnt read from them it just clicks as it would normally, awaiting a disk. When I attach 1, it can read and write from it but gives a normal DF0: and a DF1?????? in WB even though only 1 floppy is attached.

> I have switched the floppy cables
> Changed which way round the floppy cables go

> And even switched the CIA chips

> oh and I also put a new floppy drive in and the same problem happens

Any ideas?

The drives themselves have a small ID switch or jumper.
Put the one for DF0: to 0, the one for the DF1 drive to 1.
Also, the floppy cable has to be one which has some wires crossed between DF0 and DF1 !

Erm the original chinon drive has some pins with a jumper on....but I dont know what means what.

There are six pins in 2 rows of 3.

Usually there is a diagram somewhere on the device. See attached image (although it's a PC HDD)...

You would hope so anyway

Here's another picture. This one's a laptop HDD and has six pins in 2 rows of 3...

Do not take this as what the settings would be for your FDD but at least it gives you an idea of what to look for etc...

No diagram on the drive

Its a chinon FB-354 if anyone knows.

I might just put the jumper in random positions and see..

Hmmm, well if you are unable to find any documentation on the web then I guess you can try the same settings that are on that laptop HDD.

I'm pretty positive that setting the wrong jumpers will not damage the drive, it just won't work... Anyone?

Edit: check out this thread, it may help http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=18393

Ok thanks....should the chinon drive be the one with the twist in the cable?

Sorry no idea. I don't even have an Amiga anymore unfortunately

Just managed to found some info for you

I did read through both links. There was some mention about twists in http://www.amiga.org/modules/newbb/v...ime=1118772621

...simply try sticking your Chinon drive on the 'untwisted' floppy connector where the bad df0: used to be and see if it works. If you have two twists in the cable, it will work without changing any jumpers. If you only have one twist, your Chinon is most likely jumpered as DS1 (=DF1 and will need to be rejumpered as DS0...

Somebody else who's an Amiga expert will need to help you with this...

Also check out what wires are twisted.. Is it the LED signals (4-6) or the DS signals (12-14)?

If the DS signals are twisted, both drives must be DS0, otherwise have the straight one as 0 and the twisted one as 1.

Well, I assume the one which doesn't have any jumpers works as a single drive with straight cable on an Amiga ? Then it is a DS0 drive.
The FB-354 on the other hand has 6 jumper pins: 3 in the upper row, and 3 in the lower row.
Now, if it is jumpered to DS0, then the lower-middle and lower -left should be jumpered. If you want to set it as DS1 you have to jumper the lower-middle and lower-right instead.

When you have done this set them on the cable like Jope told and it should work.

Another question:
Have you set jumper A-301 on the A-2000's mainboard ? It has to be set if you want to use 2 drives !

Yes overdoc I have set it but isnt it called J-301?

Ok then I need to switch the floppys round as the non-jumpered drive has a twist in the cable!

I will get this sorted today I hope

OK ALL FIXED!

I switched the floppys around and put the jumpered on the twisted cable and the nonjumpered on the straight then set the jumpered to DS1 (DS0 doesnt work)

And it all works! Thanks to all who contributed to this thead!
