Videos, documentation, software, etc uploaded by pgovotsos

I've been in the process of scanning all the documentation I have, digitize videos, archive software (all original disks - no cracked software - serial numbers included where needed), and everything else Amiga related I have. Over the years I've accumulated every single piece of Amiga related hardware, software, video, etc. Some of the software may have been previously uploaded elsewhere but most of them aren't original disks or have been through multiple BBSes. In the various other places that software has been uploaded there usually is just the software without the documentation which can make the product difficult to use or master. Most of the documentation I haven't seen elsewhere (though I certainly could have missed is ). In addition to the software documentation I'll be uploading hardware documentation as well. I am uploading this all to the eab file server basically so that it can be preserved for the use of the community.

Things aren't going to be uploaded in any particular order. I am in two locations right now. Everything is stored in the other location and I'm gathering up boxes and bringing them here to process. So the order I grab and pack them is the order they get processed and uploaded That means that disks may be uploaded before the documentation or the other way around. As I work through everything both will eventually be uploaded.

That said, since they are so old, some of the disks have unfortunately succumbed to bit rot to the extent that I can't recover enough useful data. In most cases that shouldn't be a problem since I have multiple copies of most things so should eventually come across a good copy. I'm not uploading any software unless I have good copies of every disk for it. So if you see something uploaded, every disk will be there.

Everything is uploaded to \uploads\pgovotsos and this thread is to basically catalog it so other users can know what's been uploaded. This isn't a request thread, just a catalog thread.

The directory structure should make it pretty easy to find things. In the Software directories, both the disks and documentation for that product are in the same directory. The same applies to the Hardware directories and Multimedia Resources directories. Every company (or author in the Documentation category directories) has its own subdirectory. The Documentation directories have things like books and ephemera that may relate to another product but aren't part of that product.

*****************

This is sort of a general summary of some of what the various files I'm uploading will comprise, why I've done things the way I have, and some ideas of what you can do with them.

In general the videos digitized well, surprisingly well for some that are over 25 years old. There is occasionally some video artifacting but very little overall. The audio in some parts has some hissing and crackling but I don't know if that's due to the passage of time or the original source material. Of course, since these are VHS tapes (some few are DVDs or video CDs), fine detail like text isn't always crystal clear. I had meant for many years to have digitized them long ago but never seemed to find the time. I'm sorry it has taken so long to get around to doing this, resulting in a lower quality transfer than I would have liked. Now I'm trying to hurry and get as much preserved as I can. I have not done any audio or video corrections. That may make parts more pleasing but also results in data loss. I chose to provide the cleanest raw capture I could, leaving any decisions to massage them to you.

When downloading the videos, make sure that you have enough drive space. The 2 hour ones can be in the neighborhood of 8 GB. The videos are NOT digitized to uncompressed video files - they would simply be too large and waste the precious space available here. I've tried to strike a happy medium. The videos have been digitized to high bit rate MPEG2 files, full frame 720 x 480, 4:2:2 color (for better color accuracy than DV 4:1:1). Unless otherwise noted all videos are NTSC. Maybe a dozen I have are PAL but most of them are duplicates of NTSC ones and won't be uploaded.

I chose MPEG2 mainly because it has reasonable compression, handles this resolution well, and doesn't require a great deal of computing power to decompress which could be important if you wish to edit them on an Amiga. MPEG4 might have resulted in smaller files but would require too many resources to be edited on even some of the newer Amigas. The files are left with some heads and tails. 30 seconds or less at the head from the beginning of the source tape. The tails have mostly been edited to 2 minutes or less and cut on the GOP so there's no recompression of the file. Unfortunately some of the videos start right at the very beginning of the tape so have the tracking overlay displayed. Sorry about that but the deck I've been using couldn't disable the overlay. This doesn't result in the smallest files but the best quality short of uncompressed. If you want to sacrifice quality for a smaller file, feel free to convert them yourself.

Floppy labels, CD faces and packaging has been scanned and uploaded for much of the software and hardware in case you want to recreate the disks or just for general reference. Some of the floppy images are useful for the serial numbers. I think I've got most of the serial numbers appended to the file names but may have missed some. Also some of them are difficult to read (for me) so the images are useful.

All of the documentation has been scanned in portrait so you can read them without having to rotate them. They are all indexed so that the text can be searched. Unfortunately the package I am using doesn't work on landscape scans. Scans have to be portrait and within a couple of degrees of correct alignment for the indexing to work so I have manually de-scewed every page to get every document searchable. All pages have been scanned so that double sided printing will have the pages come out correctly.

All of the documentation, packaging and media labels is scanned at 300 dpi, 24 bit color (where there is color information) or grayscale as appropriate, and saved to PDF files. For documentation that has color covers and grayscale interiors, only the color pages are scanned in color and the rest in grayscale to try to keep file sizes as small as possible. Where I have them, I've scanned CD covers and inserts, tape box or cover sheets to insert in tape case, and indices.

I hope that these have been good compromises. If you have any better suggestions I'm certainly open to changing things.

Any questions, comments or obscenities, please let me know.

Below isn't really critical information but an explanation of the tools I used to capture everything in case you are interested.

The tool I used to do the scanning and assembly of the PDF files is a neat Open Source Windows (sorry) tool called NAPS2 (Not Another PDF Scanner 2). This lets you scan multiple things from multiple sources, import images, cut, copy, move, crop, and basic color correct pages to assemble the final PDF. Another great feature is importing PDF files and manipulating and exporting the underlying images.

This is useful so that in addition to just printing the PDF, you can access the underlying images. So the PDFs of the covers, boxes, labels, etc can be manipulated as needed for your purposes. Basically all sides of the boxes will be in one PDF, the labels for all of the floppies for one program will be in one PDF, etc for convenience to break up as / if you need.

I hope that made sense You can get NAPS2 at https://sourceforge.net/projects/naps2/

The floppies have been imaged with SuperCard Pro connecting a PC high density drive to a Windows computer. It is made by Jim Drew of Emplant (among other things) fame and can be gotten from his website at http://cbmstuff.com/ The SuperCard Pro has turned out to be a reliable tool to copy everything I've thrown at it. It's also significantly faster than trying to image the disks on a real Amiga

The floppy images have been checked with DiskSalv to make sure there are no errors on them.

CDs and DVDs have been ripped with the Open Source tool AnyBurn from http://anyburn.com/ This seems to have the most success creating Amiga CDs. Surprisingly ImgBurn failed on many of them - particularly the Club Toaster CDs.

For whatever reason, the Club Toaster CDs don't read / burn very well with ImgBurn. It doesn't seem to like the ones that have audio and data (the ones with .bin extension). I used AnyBurn to image all of the CDs and then burned them to verify a good copy. It runs quickly, without any hiccups, and is free and easy to use. You can get it at http://www.anyburn.com

This is unfortunately the PC version and not the Amiga one. Best option is to open the adf and copy the scenes and objects to the folders on your hard drive. Do NOT run the installer. It's a PC program and won't work on an Amiga. Read the manual. These objects are single sided polygons to speed up rendering. If the back side will be seen, the manual gives directions to do that.

I wanted to break down what is on the Millennium CDs. In case you don't already know, unlike the other software, Millennium is a collection of several programs, not just one.

Here's what is included in Millennium:

Wipe Studio - last version including the Power Module
RenderFX 2.0
Fast Frames 2.0
Control Tower (slightly limited compared to the full 2.0 version which is being uploaded as well)
Pro Mix Tools
CG Pilot macro collection
Electric Scene Knife (automatically detect scenes and make separate clips of each - just don't expect miracles)
Fast Fuel (VTR control using the serial port)
OZ Arexx Routines
Flyer Backup Utility for digital backup of project files
Pics2Clp uses HIIP to import various file types to Flyer clips
Lots of Toaster Wipes, backgrounds, animated image sequences, Flyer clips, and Toaster fonts

While it's assembled as a toolkit for the Flyer, much of the resources are just as useful with a Video Toaster without a Flyer.

Check the directions at the beginning of the manual for installation instructions. The programs can be installed using the standard Installer utility but the additional resources need to be manually copied over. They set it up like this on the assumption that hard drives of the day didn't have the capacity for everything.

PLEASE note the serial number listed in the manual for the Power Module for Wipe Studio. If you don't enter it you'll miss out on a lot of the functionality of Wipe Studio.

Sir, this is a monumental contribution of epic proportions. You may even begin influence people into an Amiga film making cult with all this. Thank you again!

Wow pgovotsos, that's some serious time / effort you've put in here for the benefit of the Amiga community!!!

Well done indeed, I'm sure it's very much appreciated by all; even if you haven't had many thanks as yet

No, it is basically a hardware dongle that let you run Lightwave without having a Video Toaster installed. It also let it run in PAL land and on RTG screens.

Edit: they had a bit of a spat with Newtek. Newtek would patch Lightwave so Lightrave wouldn't work, Warm & Fuzzy would patch Lightrave, etc. Warm & Fuzzy gave up around Lightwave 3.5 - I know they did 3.1 but my memory isn't sure of 3.5. The biggest problem with Lightrave is that while it would let you run Lightwave without a Toaster, you still had to buy the full Video Toaster package to get the Lightwave software. That wasn't a problem once Newtek released the standalone 4.0

Oh, I see... What a mess!

I also read that you uploaded Deluxe Video. While I 've heard it mentioned, I 've never had the luxury of ever finding a snapshot.
If my guesses about the program being an anim/sound are correct, you may have just made me very happy, if you consider that I 've been doing all editing all these years in Scala/LW/OctaMED by clipping frames/samples here and there. I 'll try it out in the weekend!

Cheers mate!

Sorry there hasn't been a lot of action here lately. I had the next big batch ready but my hard drive crashed before I had made the backup and upload. Note to self - backup each file as it is created. Hindsight is, as they say, 20/20 Going forward everything will be created on a big RAID array and backed up to another. At my age money is cheaper than time

I've started redoing everything but available time has been less available than before. We've both had health issues and just returned from celebrating our 60th anniversary with a trip.

I haven't by any means forgotten about this project, just hit a big bump in the road. I should have another batch ready in the near future.

In the meantime, keep Amiga-ing

@pgovotsos This January I will be at the Amiga Ireland event, where I will also be holding an Amiga-LW presentation course. Needless to say, you and emufan will be mentioned for your work in preserving all these plugins and videos! Thank you!

And of course, I 'd be happy to see all that will be able to attend the event!

Cheers!
