Games who write on their disks

This thread is for games who write to their gamedisks, leading to a new [a]. Together with my upcoming original scene release identification thread it will become usefull to know why we have so many [a]'s for some games and to get rid (new dat?) of them.
Description:
[r-w game] -> saves progress on disk
[r-w hs] -> saves Highscore on disk
[r-w f] -> game force you to remove the write protection before you can play
[r-w] writes on disk, unspecified

Dungeons of Avalon (1991)(Zeret)(De) [r-w f]
Dungeons of Avalon 2 (1992)(Zeret)(De) [r-w f]
East vs. West - Berlin 1948 (1989)(Rainbow Arts)(De) [r-w f]
BoBo (1988)(Infogrames)(Fr)[r-w f]
Falcon Compilation (Spectrum HoloByte) [r-w]
KAISER (1988)(Phoenix)(De) [r-w]
King's Quest III - To Heir is Human (1989)(Sierra) [r-w]
KING`S BOUNTY (1991)(New World Computing) [r-w f]
Omni-Play Horse Racing (1989)(SportTime) [r-w]
OOOPS UP! [r-w hs]
Operation Com-bat (1990)(Merit) [r-w f]
Pacific Islands (TEAM YANKEE 2) (1992)(Empire) [r-w game]

I'm pretty sure IFW told me that Return of the Jedi writes to disk (and must be write enabled to play)

Personally I think that the alts should have their own dats or confirmed [!] should have their own dats..

Again though how do we know that x game is the original working crack?...

I think, as a first step, we just should identify all scene releases among the [a]'s and flag them anyhow. The [!] is than if someone has played the game to the end, like we had confirmed that only the 3 disks FTL version of Barbarian II is 100% working. Hmmm, we will probably never find all...

just a note: i'm not sure, since it's long since i have played them, that the gold box serie of games (pools of radiance and the others) and Hillsfar, do write on one of their disks: usually the last one; sometimes it's a savedisk sometimes a (for instance) disk 3; there could be other data inside; it's a proper game disk if i remember correctly, as it contained some premade character for the game, so it would be shipped with the original game. however, i am not completely sure and i cannot check them.
what i am sure instead is about Eye of the Beholder 1 that had the savegame on disk 2 of 3. the firsts that comes to mind.
that said, many congratulations for this and the other thread about dms, wich were due; a really good idea

Sadly, there are tons of games writing back to their disks - at least the original versions. This may or may not be present on the scene versions though, as they quite often use custom formats for that and it's often easier to remove it, then to convert it.
e.g original Unreal can save the progress.

Methinks they ALL need to be properly cracked to write on a different disk if they need to write (ie save games, high scores) and to remove the need to write enable disks for those that it exists as a form of "protection"... Job for Galahad and Co methinks!

I remember when i had Turrican 1 on my C64... I wrote "World War 3 Soon" for my highscore because of the Gulf War that had just started and it saved it to the disk.. but i sold the games and everything else to buy my first Amiga. Then i bought Turrican 1 for the Amiga

Gods writes highscores and passwords onto disk 2!

Disk 1 is protected and they advice you to write-protect the disk (how nice of them!)

About the not 100% working cracks:

There is TONS of them!! I once made a thread where I listed some of them which I played myself, but I only played 1% of all games or so...
Can't find the old thread, but additionally I can add:

Barbarian II (only FTL cracks works 100%)
Wrath of the Demon (only the 2nd Skid Row crack works - first SKR crack had a bug! )

It would be great if you can dig out that thread, we can use it to identify the good dumps among tosec and add the [!] flag to them. Maybe we should start a new thread or use your old one, so ohter people who played some games to the end can post the result (work/not working etc), too!

Another...

To add to the 2 bad cracks threads, Blood Money ending crashes on crack by Antiaction of Defjam/CCS/Spreadpoint. Spreadpoint/Defjam/CCS released an 100% later, but I still liked Antiaction's trainer better. No working cracks of Iron Lord exist. Atomic Robo-Kid from Skid Row is missing Disk 2. I still haven't located a version of Awesome from Horizon that doesn't guru (the originals seem a little better as they don't crash as often). Maybe the missing Awesome Classic Disk 3 & 4 is more stable. Morever, all the TOSEC 0.29 Sword of Sodan versions reset at the ending.

Back to topic, all Test Drive II disks are [r-w hs].

Wrath of the Demon (1991)(ReadySoft)(Disk 5 of 5)[cr SKR][a3].adf 0034AE3C
I'm not going to re-sort thru these images as they were a pain the first go around. The following is what worked for me:

Wrath of the Demon (1991)(ReadySoft)(Disk 1 of 5)[cr SKR][t +1 SKR][!] CA6E3DC6

Wrath of the Demon (1991)(ReadySoft)(Disk 3 of 5)[cr SKR][!] 1C1C1CD2
// I have this labelled as Disk 2.

Wrath of the Demon (1991)(ReadySoft)(Disk 3 of 5)[cr SKR][a][!] 659E47FD

Wrath of the Demon (1991)(ReadySoft)(Disk 5 of 5)[cr SKR][!] 5949ADCD
// I have this labelled as Disk 4.

Wrath of the Demon (1991)(ReadySoft)(Disk 5 of 5)[cr SKR][a3][!] 0034AE3C
// btw, I think all Disk 5's should be labelled as
// Wrath of the Demon (1991)(ReadySoft)(Disk 5 of 5)(0)[cr SKR]

Besides adding the [!], I didn't rename the above TOSEC images. They should be updated accordingly. As you can tell from my notes several of them have incorrect disk numbers. The game was a pain to finish as I had to be hit by the axe to pass the 2nd temple barrier that comes out of the ground. I couldn't find another method of passing that point.

demoniac, i suggest to repost your last post at the "The all new tosec thread" so idoru can rename the disks. Dunno if he is reading this thread. Furthermore, why not add your bad cracks finding to that thread, too? You can flag some disks with [b bad crack] if you have played it and the game fucked up.
I'll check the thread by Overdoc if i can identify some of the bad cracks mentioned there. Too bad most of the contributions in that thread didn't supply the Tosec file name or a crc ....

Adderly,

I have added them to the other thread. I don't have the bad images info as I went thru all that stuff one year ago. I don't have the patience to revisit that now. Like I mentioned earlier, I did not enjoy the experience last time. There is very little incentive for me to revisit a title unless it's a better crack or trainer.

Kingsoft is yet another special case; that is, it's a mix of the two categories quoted above.
Some of their "highly sophisticated" ( ) games sometimes do not force you to remove write protection, but game will choke, guru or do some other stupid thing when it tries to write to disk for highscore. So no ESC for you (in the truest sense of the word ) but just RESET
