Which Joystick for WinUAE/WinFellow ?

Hi all!

Since I have installed and begin to test Games on WinUAE and WinFellow, a little Question comes again and again: "Which PC-Joystick is the best to play Amigagames on PC with WinUAE or WinFellow ?"
Has anyone an answer ?

In my own humble opinion, PC joysticks are definitely not adequate when it comes to playing "old style" games. I do have one "Playstation type" pad and a modern PC joystick, and they just don't do the job. But I understand many might well disagree.

If you want to try some "old school" stuff, you may check a German site called "Vesalia Computer" : they do sell one joystick that plugs into any usb port and is indeed a replica of an old C64 stick.

But I have never used one (not available in Australia yet, I think).

I use a USB Sega Saturn pad, which is close to a Megadrive pad. You can also get console-to-USB adapters for just about anything now.

I use a Logitech extreme 3d pro and i have no probs with it

There's no actual need for this ! An adapter is available from "vesalia.de" (see links above) : it plugs into a PC's parallel port and allows one to connect up to 4 Amiga joysticks. I've already got one such device, but never actually took the time to test it ! Therefore, if you still have your original Speedking/Navigator joystick, you might just be able to use them.

But I don't have any idea whether or not it could be used with PC games, though...

The need would come from finding a brand new or at least still working konix controler

they were damn good to play with but never lasted very long

I want to get something to play games like Speedball 2, Turrican, Gods, Goal, KO2, SWIV, well, the usual 2d games in WinUAE...

Right now i'm on keys only. I really hate gamepads... i loved the old Cheetah models back in the day - i broke a few - and would rebuy the exact same model.

Is there much problem playing with a PC joystick?

Sorry to bump a months old thread, but it beats making a new one anyway i guess.

Well, If you've got one, the x360 pad is great in winUAE and Zsnes

. Plays a lot like the old megadrive did in my real amiga.

ah, hate gamepads, never mind then.

I own two Speedlink Competition Pro USB and they do the job pretty well. Not as good as Amiga joysticks used to be but better than those spongy PC joysticks in general.

Hi ulli.amitown, since your locations seems to be in Germany too, I just bought one of the Competition Pro USB sticks at the Saturn techno superstore. They had an offer some weeks ago and they still seem to have many of these sticks in stock. I agree that it's not like the real original competition pro sticks but much better than most of the PC sticks.

I used to use this digital joystick for playing WinUAE/fellow. It use the old time joystickport on my pc. But that do go back a few years

This joystick is the best for playing amigagems (or c64) on a pc

Good quality, and handle the games fine

The new Competition PRO USB is a great thing. I use it myself - works like a charm. You are also able to map certain keyboard buttons (in WinUAE) to other 3 buttons on the joystick; say if in a certain game you need to press 'Space' to throw a granade, you can do it with the assigned fire-button instead.

I also must admit that playing all these games on a Competition PRO, after been playing them on PC-keyboard for many years, is much harder now

Myself, back in the day, I wasn't really into Competition PRO. I was a QuickShot-man. I like the pilot-style joystick that can be secured on the table so I can use only one hand when playing - much better controll. So, right now, the Comp-PRO is the "only" option that you can buy in the store, but I would really like to see one of QuickShot remakes.

I haven't got any shots but I started with a generic PlayStation style USB pad and altered the living crap out of it. The donor was an 80s vintage microswitched Star Cursor, a locally made three-button deal. I used one on my A500 years ago and always liked em, nice and solid.

I simply removed all the standard wiring, then carefully soldered wires between the pads where the buttons went on the PSX pad onto the microswitches, and velcro'd the PCB into the bottom of the Star Cursor.

Works a treat... but I have noticed that no solution in UAE feels quite the same as the responsiveness of a real microswitch stick of any form on the real Amiga. Delays through the emulation I guess.
