another annoying list

When you say 'refuse whatever external floppy drive' do you mean even though an external drive is connected the game will not use it?

if so, Sly Spy (in WinUAE with DF1: enabled) says "PLEASE INSERT DISK B INTO DRIVE B" so it does use 2 drives!!

checked again, confirmed
strange behaviour btw, if you insert both disks before booting the game will use just the internal drive!

the df1 drive must be left empty, until the game will ask for the second disk after the boot

list updated (also with some new titles) thanks

Cracks will sometimes vary (for better or for worse) so it would be good to be clear in your list if it's a cracked version or the original/ipf

I never insert disks into DF1: as I wait for the insert disk prompt to see which drive it will use!

probably because they need that little bit extra ram to run. Additional drives soaks up your ram, it's a pain in the ass.

Only on AmigaDOS compliant loading games, custom can simply use same trackbuffer memory.

combined with the 512k restriction, back in the day;

at the end of the day, i think that the number of disk swaps is what count, overall
i mean, to decide if add or not the extra drive(s);

many games of this list are absolutely playables with just one or two swaps

some games just have the intro (and some the outro too) on the first disk, and the game on second, and that's the least issue, if we can call issue in first

imo the worst ones were those that needed a swap each time you were killed, with the main menu/high score on one disk, and the game on another

many games would have benefited from just the use of the extra 512k trapdoor memory

EDIT
i'm adding some cracked games too, if the disks are not included in the ipf Tosec

i got this curious error, trying to make work Mr.Blobby original ipf's;
it should be an OCS/ECS game, but for being an 1994 game, seems to refuse many configurations

after a couple of fails, i have tried to boot the game with the second disk, using an AGA setting...
not a guru or a reset, but this error message in return
MiniOS version 1.0

reached to run it with a default A500 512k+512k slow conf, afterward

I was sure Settlers could handle multiple drives?

checked again, another title with strange behaviour, but you are right

the strange thing, booting from the disk1 (intro) an inserting the other two disks in df1 and df2, all works ok
but just the intro, cause when the game will try to load the real program (on disk2), will search it on df0 (mandatory)

booting from disk3 (so skipping intro) is what i have tried with my tests, so the game will ask after a first load for the disk2 in df0

a solution for ks2.x and ks3.x users can be the gamedisk2 in df0 and gamedisk3 in df1

curious, thanks

the list is growing

i have noted a strange behaviour in Cedric and the Lost Sceptre, cracked versions
(due no .ipf's around)
on the manual there is written that the game uses until three floppy drives

but, using an A500 or an A500+ configuration, with in add whatever RAM amount,
i have reached the first level just using a single drive

adding a second drive make crash the game at the end of the first level loading here

someone can confirm?

EDIT the standard .adf's disks set works fine instead
so the problem could be in the PDY crack

i'm doing a second round check, using the hol database
to check what i have missed

btw the list should be 80% complete atm, if not more

about the results, a bit of shame for all the multidisk Coktel Vision games (Bargon Attack, Goblins serie, etc) or some Ubisoft ones (B.A.T., expecially the second one) that lack of the external drive(s) opportunity

i have four games that i'm almost sure should be added to the list :

- Future Wars, but i need to play it until the second disk check (also strange that is possible to set the savedisk on an external drive, but not the gamedisk)

- Gobliins 2, same as Future Wars, i need to play until the first disk change

- Zool (OCS & AGA), due the codewheel
for Zool2 there is a very useful codelist, but i cannot find something also for the first chapter

The cracked version of Zool 2 certainly doesn't recognise a second drive, and infuriatingly it makes you swap from disk 1 to 2 and then back to disk 1 between levels (I don't remember the original doing this, it feels really shoddy, but it was a long time ago.

I don't mind this if there are 2 disks and you never need disk 1 again after swapping to disk 2, but its annoying when you need to swap after every level. I can't believe there are point 'n' click adventures on the list, surely the most disk-swap-hungry games of all.

yeah, the double swap was common to some cracks bitd
another one was Turrican 2 Defjam, that after the third level required a double swap (disk2 and again disk1) before starting each further level, until the end.

during my tests, i found some games that probably have a garbled data displacement into the disks
like insert disk2, very short loading, insert disk3

or linear games that require a not ordered swap
like ie a 4 disk game, that asks for disk4 after the first one

I am 99% sure Moonstone only accepts disks in DF0. Seem to remember it being very frustrating to play as I have 3 disk drives and 2.5mb of RAM on my Amiga 1000 lol nothing like the 'sip your cola while it loads more' Summer of It Came from the Desert 2022
