Gray-scale games that use full 256 shades?
This an old idea/thought I had 20 years ago but suddenly I realized I don't know the answer to it.
We're there any fully gray-scale games on the old-ish systems..?. the ones that supported 24-bit palette but could only display say 256 colors. I always imagined it would be cool to make an AGA game that looked like "true color" but used grey scale instead (ditching hue and saturation but same value range). Did anyone ever do such a thing? |

I would say a proper 64 grayscale palette would already be enough for good results. At least for in-game graphics.

Evil's Doom in dungeon sequences have monochromed AGA themes (yellow/brown palette with torch, blue with magic light, green underwater and gray with sunlight)

I'm talking about using 256 shades of grey to make it look good, not to achieve a particular atmosphere.
Take a look at the pic below (3-image stack) ![]() Textlink: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vesxtahstr...olors.png?dl=0 Consider a true color image (ok the resolution is downscaled to Amiga levels so at 320x256 you really only get ~82k pixels and also the theoretical maximum colors) The second image is downgraded to 256 colors (with dithering) but this is not realistically what you would get on AGA (without a hell of a lot of copper palette hacks, anyway) because youd more likely have a fixed palette with fewer colors in certian ranges.. Then at the bottom you have a 256 shades of grey image. Looks much better with smooth gradients etc.. and for certain types of games it could work IMO. (Think Limbo on Xbox [ Show youtube player ]) |
