Hehe, that Agnus socket replacement pic reminds me of replacing the cracked buster socket in my A3000T.. :-D

I used the trusty paint stripper-rework station there too. There's really no other way to get sockets with that many pins off the circuit board. :-)

Card was dead if you switch on (jumper) fast ram, so ive replaced dram chips and it works, hell yeaah!

Hyunday chips are desoldered from 72pin simm -.) (due to unable to find same part number anywhere else)

Anyone got any tips of how to de-solder something?

(In this case a simm socket from an A4000 motherboard without damaging the board)

Sold wick and a £20 (paint stripper) hot air gun...

i would recomend a small custom built nossel for the gun (i believe that a coke can or similar could be used / beaten to shape *this was mentioned too ) )

However a small solder re-work station would do wonders for a small investment. ebay prices have gone up recently so have a shop.. you should be able to get a decent one under £70.

If however you are lifting components i would recomend a copper rod or similar to place onto them and absorb the heat generated by the hot air desoldering unit.

Lichfield Electronics (I believe owned by Oliver Hannaford-day of CDTV.org.uk) has decent prices, £55 for the cheapest model http://www.lichfieldelectronics.co.u...d39ec734c2aa99 though, he doesn't seem to stock solder paste, flux pens, or indeed any surface mount components, which is something of an oversight in my view.

Farnell and RS will supply solder and flux, along with components, however their prices are not the best for home constructors, http://www.futurlec.com/ do cheap components (along with a reasonably priced board manufacturing service) but no solder or flux.

I did this to a GeForce 4 Ti4600 many moons ago, it was a bad ass card



I had to change ALL the caps, but I was most pleased with the one I stuck on the back, I thought I was being well clever
I was given the card and it only cost me about £2 to put right I really did think that was good.
If I remember it ended up on the back because the board was damaged in some way...
The card ran for about 2 more years then died due to RAM for no reason

EDIT : I knew there was a reason I was looking in here...
Does anyone know where I can get a solder pump, not those crappy spring loaded solder suckers, I used to have this thing with a rubber ball that basically sucked it up as you pumped it, but I have not seen one for years, eBay shows all those crappy ones I don't want.

I REALLY badly need to learn how to solder properly, a rework station looks nice are they easy to use?

Well I have ordered some essentials for now solder, desoldering wick, flux, soldering paste, super pointy tweezers. Gonna get a new iron, and I want to get a Willem programmer thingy, theres some many things I need to learn to do, but I never have the tools

I will keep looking for a hot air rework station, that site with the SMD tips makes it look a little TOO easy to use.

After all these years I still cant solder for toffee, I made up a scart lead for my arati jaguar last night and I made a right mess, badly burning myself in the process.

Worst bit was, I realised half way through that the connectors I was using either end were intended to be solderless

I saw that too on hackaday.. It's a good video for someone venturing to the SMD world.

However you must learn how to solder through hole stuff and wires into connectors before even considering SMT work.. Without soldering experience, doing SMD will just result in a nervous breakdown and a ruined PCB.

If you don't have enough talent ($$$$) to buy/rent/borrow/steal a SMD rework station, and have to dessolder a capacitor (or a resistor, or whatever), just use two solder irons, one in each lead of the device.
