Do you remember the days when groups like defjam released compilation disks with multiple games in one disk?

My first Defjam/CCS pack was Carrier Command. God that disk was a revelation coming from a Speccy.

Marble Madness is good game I played it a lot in Arcade machine in the Italian Pizza Restaurant

Only the cracked version of Turrican 2 had 2 disks.
The original was 1 disk.

Still unbelievable for me how that amount of graphics, music and code could fit on one disk.

So many fantastic games mentioned.

I can't rank them, so I'm just throwing out "No Second Prize" as it hasn't been mentioned I don't think. If it has then ditto

What else can I remember?................

James Pond
Deluxe Pacman
Shufflepuck Cafe

are a couple I remember.

Most of the 2 disk games used the first one for the intro.

I'd go for Exile. An open world physics and AI based game, years before the genre became popular.

Also Player Manager which is an amazing game

And Lotus Trilogy on CD32

Yeah, Exile was very impressive.
I've mostly played it on my C64, and it was very impressive there too.

But for best game on one disk, I have to go with Frontier.
The size of that game is insane, and it's not even a full disk!
Procedural's at it's best.

I had it on BBC Micro, which in some ways I prefer probably just because I played it there first. The graphics are more colourful. I think it's that. CD32 version was disappointing because they zoomed it in too much.

I never got into Frontier. I really like the original Elite on Amiga though - despite the gaudy color scheme! It's more streamlined and snappy. One day I will try Frontier again,

Well, Frontier expanded on pretty much everything in comparison to Elite. It has much more ships to choose, more weapons, you had missions, and most impressive is that all planets and cities, and orbitals are in real life scale. You can start in Solar system (with all planets and satelites), and hundreds of other system you can travel (nobody measured how much systems Frontier have)

But it had 2 weakness, imho:
1) Non arcade dogfights. It maybe had better physics model then Elite, but Elite was way more fun in dogfights. Frontier made it very automated, and boring. The assassination missions is fun, though.
2) No campaign at all. Elite have some sort of unique missions (that someone could call it campaign), but Frontier just have several types of procedural missions. Once you do them all several times, buy a best ship out there you like, nothing much to do in the game.

I think that's good about what you say with the extra detail BUT I also think that was David Braben's weakness back then- his passion was much more creating a huge universe instead of focusing on improving gameplay and making the combat more exciting (like you say). Also people with A500's said it was ultra slow even on low details. Ian Bell was missed for the sequel I think!

I still haven't played Elite : Dangerous (I still have an Xbox 360 as my most recent console!) but from what I read at the time, Braben had realized the mistakes he made with Frontier by that time.
