Play Amiga games online multiplayer - has it/can it be done

How hard would it be to come up with a system of playing Amiga multiplayer games online?

In a similar way to the Checkers game etc built into Windows.

Wouldn't it be great to be able to play games in the Community instead of just talking about them?

@Mounty
It's already been done - WinUAE Kaillera - and development has been discontinued, with no takers to pick up the project.

Maybe it's time for someone to take a fresh look at it.

I for one would love to be able to get a bit of retro online multiplayer action, especially if it was as accessible as MS have made it.

If you go even more old school, a user in Georgia, USA (about 2500 miles away) and I played a game of Firepower over the Internet using real Amigas and a couple of serial-ethernet devices.

Worked pretty good, except for a few things.
1- For some reason, if we tried to "text chat" in game, it killed it. But the gameplay worked and we could "voice chat" on the phone.
2- (and this is the important one) I LOST every game we played!!!!
(OK, that's not in any way a surprise, but they could have let me almost win one of them!!) ;-)

Interesting. Do you have a link to that software?

I am not sure many games would tolerate the latency of an Internet connection.
Even the super low latency of a connection to Google or Amazon cloud services is between 30 and 40 ms which is about 1.5 to 2 times a 50Hz frame. (And you would be insanely lucky to reach this latency between two random Internet connected computers.)

Most of the multiplayer games support multiplayer via parallel or serial and as Toni said in another thread they usually assume < 1 frame latency.

This said, there is no reason why new Amiga games could not support Internet multiplayer gameplay.
The only thing which prevents it at the moment is lack of volunteers to code them.

It is intuitive that games like Streetfighter II would be problematic due to latency, but I was thinking of turn-based puzzle or strategy games.

Maybe there is no demand for Internet play, and maybe talking about retro games online really is more fun than playing them.

Who knows?

As pointed out, the new chosen weapon of today is FS-UAE.
