Supercars II has got me baffled

Hello me again

Right, I've been trying to get Supercars II disks working in an A1200, when I use the ADF's in Winuae they work like a champion no matter the settings, A1200/AGA/68030 the lot... but as soon as burn the ADF's to floppy disks with Easy ADF I put disk 1 in the machine and when it gets to the title screen it goes a bit mad, the disk drive sounds like it's farting and the music stutters and it generally gets stuck.

Can anyone explain the reason for this please? I can WHDLoad it but I'm interested to know what type of gremlin this is.

EDIT: I have a modded PC drive but I tried putting an old Chinon in thinking it was that and the same thing happened.

It's about 2 week old from Amigakit, I've tried with a Chinon FZ-354 and it does the same unless the problem is during writing... I'll have a go at using the Chinon to write it.....

EDIT: Same thing with Chinon but I've found what was causing it, disabling CPU caches in the boot menu fixed it but the disk noise at the title screen is still pretty crazy, I don't remember my A500 roaring quite so loud.

Update: I the think the loud repetitive grinding is a bad ADF? it sounds like it's struggling to read something at the title screen and takes a while to load.

Which ADF have you tried, any TOSEC set?

I'm not sure what you mean by TOSEC but I've tried a few, the one in question is Skidrow it works but the noise the drive makes at the title screen is a bit worrying. I can't get any of the others to work apart from an AGA modified one but that seems to have missing scoreboards after a race, all of the others I've tried just freeze shortly after boot.

I originally thought the sound skipping and drive noise were connected but it appears not, the skipping sound got fixed by disabling CPU caches but the drive grinding noise remains.

Perhaps it's normal and I've just forgotten how loud they can get at times, it's been over 10yrs since I last played my old A500.

From memory (doing the WHDLoad version) there are some major faults in the game, and the disk drive does seek all the way back to track 0 then the correct track an awful lot, causing that grinding noise you mention. You should just stick with the WHDLoad version!

Yeah I will do thanks, I was just curious to know what the problem was as I was concerned it might be something with my Amiga.

or write them even?

you're right of course it's just my brain being lazy.

Are these TOSEC...?

Super cars ii (1991)(gremlin)(disk 1 of 2)[cr hp] 852 Kb
Super cars ii (1991)(gremlin)(disk 1 of 2)[cr hp][f aga nomad] 852 Kb

Super cars ii (1991)(gremlin)(disk 1 of 2)[cr skr][a] 838 Kb
Super cars ii (1991)(gremlin)(disk 1 of 2)[cr skr][t +9 setrox] 844 Kb
Super cars ii (1991)(gremlin)(disk 2 of 2)[cr hp] 867 Kb
Super cars ii (1991)(gremlin)(disk 2 of 2)[cr hp][f aga nomad] 867 Kb
Super cars ii (1991)(gremlin)(disk 2 of 2)[cr skr] 857 Kb
Super cars ii (1991)(gremlin)(disk 2 of 2)[cr skr][a2] 857 Kb
Super cars ii (1991)(gremlin)(disk 2 of 2)[cr skr][a] 790 Kb

I tried all of those and could only get the ones in bold to work (the poor compatibility might be due to my A1200?), I played through the Skidrow one fine I was just a bit scared by the drive noise at the title screen, the AGA version worked okay but there were a few minor oddities.

Yes, those look like TOSEC named disks. Some disks might not work on your A1200, but it's always worth a try in WinUAE first.

I did a crack of supercars 2 a few years ago. I never had a chance to test it so please be my guest(in the zone). I never did any AGA fixing tho, so it may not be useful to you :S

Roll eyes (sarcastic)

Mick, unfortunately I have to tell you that you MUST play both the easy and hard level to the end to figure out whether a particular TOSEC "version" really works 100%.
From memory, at least one will boot and load fine first, but show garbled graphics after stage 4 or 5 (and will no longer recover, let alone go back to normal again). I'm very sure it's because of a knackered disk used for transferring back in early Lazarus days.
So be alert.

I've played through easy and medium so far both were fine but I'm not so good at medium (I could never play it all those years ago because my disk 2 was corrupt ), I'll give hard a try later. The noise problem seems to be the modified PC drive I have it just behaves a bit louder to the old drives I guess.
