Formating a Hard Drive in WinUAE and putting it in a A1200

Hello

Does anyone know of a easy to follow guide that will guide me through this? Or can they offer one?

I want to place a HD in the PC, format and install it under WinUAE and then, after fillinf it with whatever files from my 'virtual Amiga' put it back in my A1200 for use.

I have searched the EAB and Google etc but cant find a straight forward walk-through

Thanks

good question...

if you put the drive in your PC you will have to partition it, so windows will be able to use it...

i believe it woudn't be a problem to then create a virtual hd in winuae using the drive and doing a fresh workbench install...

the problem may occur when you put the drive in the amiga... as (i think) the drive will need to be re-partitioned for the amiga to use (?)

another solution may be to...

create a virtual HD in winuae in a folder on your PC, then transfer the entire folder to your amiga (slow?), then copy the contents of that folder over your original workbench install (on the amiga)... a dodgy process

needless to say, i am no workbench pro.. attempt this at your own risk

If I remember right, you can do this with Amithlon.

You can do it with WinUAE. No need to play with hdf's.

Go to harddrives-tab, click "Add Harddrive" and select the drive. Note that only totally empty or RDB-partitioned drives are visible. There is command-line parameter that can be used to disable this check, check readme.txt.

Run hdtoolbox and use uaehf.device (not scsi.device). Continue partitioning/formatting exactly like using real Amiga.

You don't need Amithlon, WinUAE can do it just Fine!

I believe that I pulled off this stunt awhile ago.
I had an 800 MB (2.5 Inch) HD in my A1200, and I wanted to transfer some Downloaded Amiga Software from My WinUAE "Virtual Amiga" running on the PC.
I purchased a USB 2.5 inch HardDrive Case from eBay for around $20, (it looks like they are cheaper now! see this link:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...category=41911

This allowed me to plug the Drive into my PC via the USB Port, But it should work just as well to hook it directly to your IDE Bus in the PC (just be aware that you might have to switch the Drive from Master to Slave etc. so that it doesn't interfere with your normal PC Drive). Now, of course, if you are trying to hook up a 2.5 inch Amiga Drive to a 3.5 inch Drive Cable (40-pin versus 44-pin), then you will need an adapter something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...category=31534

Anyways, once you hook it up, do NOT let Windows format it or change it (I think XP might offer to format it for you, so just hit "cancel" if it does)
All I did was open up the WinUAE Config Screen with My normal configuration, and added the Drive to the bottom of the list by using the "Add HardDrive" button indicated in the first Picture:

If you have an Amiga Formatted Drive, or a Unpartitioned Drive Hooked up, WinUAE should show it in the pull-down menu (second picture):

(I don't have one hooked up right now so my menu is blank)

Then I booted WinUAE like I normally would, and there was my A1200 Drive Icon on my Workbench! From there I could drag "PC" items to the A1200 HD (or vice versa) or use Directory Opus etc.

I hope that helps...if it wasn't clear enough, just let me know....
