Amiga 2000 - crash when copying files to RAM

Hi All,
Hoping someone could point me to a solution with this problem. I'm sorry the data below is soooo long....

When copying files to RAM (does not happen copying between different partitions), at the same point the system hangs or crashes and resets. I have tried the GVP RAM test and it passes without issue.

Stripping the machine back to basics with only either the GVP Combo030-40Mhz or GVP HC+8, or both:

With the GVP HC+8 only, showconfig reports the 8MB @ $200000-$9FFFFF. In DOpus the system will crash when FAST RAM comes down to approx 6350kb remaining. Booting just to CLI (No WB) and copying files to RAM: also crashes the machine before all the RAM is full. This occurs copying from both the hard drive, and a floppy disk.

With the Combo030 only, the following occurs:
"Autoconfig" with 1 4Mb simm + 4mb soldered ($1000000-$17FFFFF 8Mb) - NO CRASH

"Autoconfig" with 2 4Mb simms + 4mb soldered ($200000-$9fffff 8Mb , $1000000-$13FFFFF 4Mb) - NO CRASH
"Extended" with 2 4Mb simms + 4mb soldered ($1000000-$1BFFFFF 12Mb) - NO CRASH

"Autoconfig" with 3 4Mb simms + 4mb soldered ($200000-$9fffff 8Mb , $1000000-$17fffff 8Mb) - CRASH with approx 4.2Mb FAST RAM remaining
"Extended" with 3 4Mb simms + 4mb soldered ($1000000-$ffffff 16Mb) - CRASH with approx 4.2Mb FAST RAM remaining

With both Combo (set to Extended otherwise all RAM is not seen) and HC+8
Combo with 2 4Mb simms + 4mb soldered ($1000000-$1BFFFFF 12Mb) & HC+8 ($200000-$9fffff 8Mb) - CRASH with approx 6.3Mb FAST RAM remaining

Combo with 1 4Mb simms + 4mb soldered ($1000000-$17FFFFF 8Mb) & HC+8 ($200000-$9fffff 8Mb) - CRASH with approx 6.3Mb FAST RAM remaining

To clarify the state of my system, I have tried with 2 different power supplies, 2 different hard drives. I have swapped each of the socketed custom chips (including the 68000 CPU and different ROMs (3.1 and 2.05) but excluding the CIA chips)...all with no effect on the issue.

I cant see any patterns...can anyone see any patterns to suggest where the issue lays?

If you switch around the SIMMs in one of the first 16MB configs will it still crash @ 4.2MB?
Memory can still be faulty even if it passes a test, however if that is the case, then you have two faulty memory positions since it will fail with either expansions on their own. So that seems improbable.
Maybe some memory interface on the 2000 MB or bus logic? The Agnus socket could be cracked or otherwise faulty?

How does it crash? Guru? The maybe the error code in the guru could help in explaining exactly where it crashed.

Thanks for the reply!

I have swapped around the 3 simms on the Combo and the crash does not change. And being that it crashes with either board (using different simms) it doesnt seem likely to me that either board is causing this fault.

The crash isnt always the same. Sometimes the screen gets completely corrupted with mish mash of moving colours/patterns, sometimes the screen just goes grey, sometimes it just freezes with what it was showing. And yes, sometimes it does go to a guru (Ill try extract the code). The power light flashes in all cases. Eventually the system seems to reset, sometimes it restarts by its own accord sometimes not.

Does the Agnus control the access to FAST RAM? I was a minor bit suspect of the Agnus socket....whilst all the pins seemed in line a couple of them just looked wrong....I cant find the exact words to describe what I mean. I did try different Agnus chips, and i did try clean the socket with alcohol.

The Agnus doesn't have anything to do with the accelerator RAM.

Replace the setpatch file in the wb-startup
or
switch out the current KS chip with another of the same.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions.

Indeed I have tried it with 3 kickstarts (3.1 and 2.05), same result.

The trouble happens without Workbench, and setpatch loading.

It must be a hardware issue.

It happens just from the cli (when copying from a floppy disk to RAM it freezes), without loading into WB

ie....boot without startup sequence form early start menu. copy df0: all RAM: and partway through copying a few discs, without the RAM being full, it freezes.

This is why I am sure it is not a software issue....

I did a google for that rom, I see it mentioned but I couldnt find a link to a burnable rom. Is that rom copyrighted still, or is it available as a burnable rom?

is in the "Amiga forever" from Cloanto, but don't test the ram in use, test wery well all other chip

you can create a floppy with AAA _ftp://80.220.82.175/mirror/grandis.nu/Commodore_Amiga/App/Disk/Driver/aaanalyzer2.DMS
