A600 IDE port fault - SOLVED, was KS version in use.

Hi all. Got my A600 recapped the other week. The case had never been opened so was non HD model from new, and so would not know if the IDE port was working before recap or not.
Anyway, everything else is okay.
The IDE port though powers up the harddisk or DOM board but apart from a little led activity on bootup for the HD, that is it. The drive is not detected in early bootup. Is there another way to get IDE HD function without the inbuilt one or is it a case have to send for repair?
Thanks,
BM

Hi CCRider, 2.05

Should say that the drives that are not working in the 600, do work in the other 600 that was recapped as well.

We need to know the full Kickstart version, not the "release" version.

On A600s with Kickstart 37.299, the internal IDE port isn't enabled in software.

You need at least 37.300 for it to work.

Ah, never knew that, assumed it was active from day one. Very interesting information, thanks. As it typical the machine is in bits right now, will check later.

You don't need to turn it on to discover. The version number is printed on the ROM chip.

Bromigo!

Just to add. If sticking to the ROM version it’s worth getting revision 37.350 as this version can support >4GB Hard Disk partitions

I, for one, would go straight to 3.2 ROMs... no worries with disk sizes, at all.

I am really warming to keeping things stock with these 600’s. There is just something nostalgic having a 128Mb drive with simple Workbench install. The Gotek I have got kind of means I don’t need big drives and massive CPU upgrades as I remember when I would buy AF and CU magazines and play demo versions of games for ages on our A500.
But thank you all for your pointers, learning new things today :-)

You may come across other issues when trying the older A500 games as they will require 1.3 ROM. A lot of people tend to go all out for the CF/SD card HDD solution and using Whdload with a ROM folder in Devs:

But you’ll learn Mang!

Yep, I need to find a 60-120Mb HDD for my A600HD. I didn't get my ROM updated either when I got it recapped.

20MB HDD is too small, It's Okay as you can have WB2+, Deluxe Paint III, Devpac Installed and maybe a couple of other utils.
40MB is good as then you have room for a C Compiler or a whole bunch of t-files from some Amiga BBS's back in the day and some extra utils AmiTCP/Miami, NCOMM, PowerPack, Xfddecrunch, AsmOne and a word processor.

It works :-)

ROM arrived today and transplanted into the A600, and bingo! HDD active.
Thanks Supadupa, tops
