Where are the Shadow of the Beast graphics rips?
While browsing some threads about Shadow of the Beast remakes I noticed that everyone seems to have all those sprites, yet they are nowhere to be found on the internet. Is there any site or thread that has all the graphics? Or maybe a list what already has been ripped so people won't have to do redundant work? Especially from Beast 1 and 2 I already found an interesting thread about the Beast III graphics, as well as one with a load of SotB graphics (mainly tiles for the levels). I also tried Codetapper's tool (excellent by the way) but I couldn't get all the sprites I wanted. Any ideas?
What I found so far: - All maps for Beast II and Beast III are available via Hall of light - Enemy sprites for Beast 1 have been ripped from the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis (the sheet is available on http://www.spriters-resource.com/) but the palettes are wrong Last edited by dex; 02 January 2015 at 21:53. |

Oh nice! Is this one from HoL or the one a forum member named "clenched" made? By the way, aren't the maps on HoL with watermarks or are there mapversions without those marks? Without the marks, we would already have all the necessary tiles! Still, SOTB 1 maps don't seem to be on HoL at all, or did I just not find them?

I've created this map before my last post....
The maps on HOL are watermarked because the team decided that whoever want them should ask the HOL team...the reason is that the team put much work in this database and wouldn't see that people just "steal" the work.... but of course you can get them without watermarks... you want some tiles ??? notice the format they used for the tiles....32x25... |

What... how? That fast? Alright, I will try it myself then - I already did but with less impressive results, thanks Going to look into this right now.
Edit: I don't get a thing out of it, read the tutorial, doing something very basic very wrong here I guess, trying again now. Last edited by dex; 03 January 2015 at 16:20. |

I didn't get any further than this. There are parts of the trees visible but I guess the Bitplane width and height is wrong? The tutorials are quite helpful but I still cannot get any other game to work than what's covered there.

Oh thanks, I will try it out now You can also find a demo of the rebuilt engine I am currently working on in the Zone, it's not a complete project like the one from darkfalzx, however
Edit: Alright I got it now, great - thank you very much for your time and help Edit 2: Who can I ask/write to for un-watermarked maps of Beast 2 and 3? Last edited by dex; 03 January 2015 at 16:27. |

Hmm. I think after a castle and a tunnel or two, Joe will have this whole game mapped. The right hand part of the underground level reminded me of something else not liked about this game. That is the way the well casing is broken apart. Even paced off the distance from a fixed X coordinate at different heights and the distances were different. This is in spite of the illusion that the well casing is plumb.
Regarding Beast 2 & 3 maps, I have put Beast 3 back in the Zone. There is a Beast 2 map on EAB file server. Type sotb and limit search to Zone in search boxes. Unknown if that is the same as the one on HOL. |

Alright, thank you very much Yes, those are the right maps. Hm, you're right about the well. Darkfalzx is currently creating quite an enhanced port with a lot of updated graphics, I am sure the well will be fixed there, several other elements are already updated!

Is it me or the tiles for the 2nd part of underground are actually using at least 3 palettes ?

There is definitely more than one palette in use, as the lying skeleton top left in the map usually has red eyes and is part of the background, it doesn't have the red eyes when just using the one palette from the copper in Maptapper (as you can also see in the rips).
I wonder if the font from the intro scrollers before each stage can be ripped. So far I couldn't get them out of there with Maptapper. Are these fonts for the scrollers sprites or actually tiles? Edit: In the compressed savestate I attached to this post, I guess I can see the letters somehow, but maybe it's my mind playing tricks. According to WinUAE (disabling sprites with the Ms 0 command) the letters are in fact no sprites. Last edited by dex; 05 January 2015 at 14:40. |

Ah and this is how far I am at the moment, looks like the letters are indeed there somewhere. I attached the ini from Maptapper and a screenshot.

Hey, wow that's just great - you're extremely good at this, aren't you? Thank you very much, I hope I can find the capital letters for this font on my own this time with your modified ini

Ok if you watch the screenshots at HOL closely, you will recognise that these fonts are high res and stretched (take the ripped fonts, multiply by 2 and then divide only the width by 2). All this is in contrast to the picture, which is lo-res. Back to the screenshots at HOL, you see that if you play the game in low resolution (via emulation), the fonts will be "smoothed" (but not smeared or blurred) so that you can still read them and the fit better in the whole low resolution context.
So I scaled the fonts to high resolution and scaled them down 2 times (1 pixel shift for each picture) and then combined them again with negative multiplication of the colours (Photoshop) to get a pixel perfect image of the scaled down, yet still pixel perfect fonts, you have on the HOL screenshots. I also attached the fonts for your viewing pleasure Compare them with this shot on HOL, should be pixel perfect http://hol.abime.net/pic_full/screen...91_screen3.png |

@dex
if you want to get the fonts then the easy way is to make scrcopy of the screen once in a while with areplay. assembling all the chars into one final picture is done in half an hour. |
