Is it possible to use A500 CD drive for games?

Is it possible to attach a CD drive to A500 and play games and such from a CD?

Yes. However depending on the configuration of your A500, it might not live up to your expectations.

Yes, eg A570 is external CDROM (bootable!)

Could you set/patch HD games on a CD to save to floppy?

Try WHDLoad with a legal key to install it on your HD, if you have one.

In theory : yes, but I don't see why one would want that. Even if someone bothers to convert a game that isn't available on floppies already, you'll just end with a lot of floppies and swapping. HDs or CFs aren't that expensive that it's worth the hassle

claim valid only for 600/1200/3000/4000 - CDTV/CD32/500/2000 are without anything that can be used for HDD/CF connection - what is worse A570 can be easier to buy (for reasonable price) than HDD controller for A500 for example.

I was just curious to whether it was possible.

If it were relatively simple, it would be semi-useful for my CD32 + floppy drive. Games that require loads of floppies and too much RAM for WHDload may benefit from it all being on CD but saving to the floppy drive.

Most AmigaCD games that aren't available on floppy are at least AGA (which rules out 3 of the 4 no-go models you mentioned). Anyway, which game(s) are you thinking about?

@twiggy
It's not trivial (like just copying the files over) to do it. Someone would have to really patch the game to work from floppies.

If you fit the 2Mbyte Fast-RAM upgrade to the A570 when used with 2Mbyte Chip RAM A500+ it will play almost any ECS WHDload game from CD.

Certainly cheaper than a SCSI hard drive but if you can buy (and upgrade) a GVP HD8+ you'll enjoy that much more.
