Very nice job
This makes me want to construct a UV box, it would be a similar shape to an oven with a door on the front, mirrored/reflective insides with some UV bulbs. It will probably of course need a couple of large fans fitted as it could get quite warm from all the bulbs and will need some sort of clear shelf such as perspex or glass to place the yellowed plastic items on. Could maybe even fit a timer and light dimmer switch (incase your away for a while you can turn down the UV intensity). This would make a nice little project for anyone, or you might even be able to buy something like this but im not sure UV box + retr0brite = whiteness whatever the weather |

I used tin foil as a reflector, and an energy saver style bulb which produces less heat but just as much ultra-violet. (These don't work with dimmer switches). As for timer, a simple mechanical timer switch will do the job if it's of the right type: one with pegs or similar for on and off...

@ Chiark
As you can see, the fanboys and trolls have started to diss the science on Slashdot; I know I dumbed it down a hell of a lot, so that non-science folk could get an idea of the concept, but I didn't expect them to take it literally.....even so, I just had to feed the trolls a little bit, so that they get an idea that I do know what I am talking about; I just don't happen to have a GC or an HPLC sitting at home to prove what's going on. Sheesh... |
