Super League 2022: Round 8 - Batman

The Batman adfs and WHDLoads have some bugs and scoring differences. Because of this we must all use the same version of the game. The 1 disk Ocean release. Also, we are playing to get as far through the game as possible with the lowest score. Details below. Mostly it will be similar to normal.

For a huge number of people this will be the first game played on their brand new Amiga 500, thanks to the Batman Pack in 1989. I actually played New Zealand Story first but ignore me and enjoy some multi-genre Batman action.

Whoever wins this round gets to choose the year we use for round 11, out of the available choices. I will contact the winner by PM.

Rules:

• Get the best score you can, during this round.
• Post screenshots of your score in this thread, and write the score nearby.
• Scores to be achieved without save-states, trainers, passwords, and cheats.
• No continues or infinite score leeching.
• Finish the game and post a screenshot of the end for the completion star.

Special Scoring:

• If you game over on level 1 submit your normal score + 200,000
• From level 2 onwards your Final Score = (Level x 200,000) - Score + (Lives x 10,000)
• If you complete the game and Joker is dead (at the bottom of the cathedral) add another 50,000 points.
• From level 2 onwards take your screenshots at the start of the level and the last scene of the game. At the end of the game you can take a screenshot of Joker before he is dead if you prefer and not add the extra 50,000. F1 = Pause
• There are 5 levels plus completion

6x100,000-331,990 = 268,010

Eventually completed. Tried WHDLoad 1-disk version, and luckily that didn't crash last level. Drove sloppily and missed time limit in second level. First, third and fourth levels went well.
Earlier played WHDLoad 2-disk version and about 50% attempts it crashed on last level.

Just to show that Amiga isn't alone with problems of Batman's last level This is what happens Atari ST's HD installed version if you die on last level. There's no way to continue: first Batman shows some magic at staying in the sky. Then he fells outside cathedral.

I made a mistake with the scoring equation by lowering it too far. It means you can easily get bigger scores than completion much earlier in the game. So I've changed it to 200,000 per level.

Sorry for the mess. Should be good now.

Final Score = (Level x 200,000) - Score

Here are the updated scores.

This change will be really bad for anyone that can't finish level 1.

To fix that. If you game over on level 1 add 200,000 to your normal score.

And there's another oddity in this game, discovered thanks to capehorn. Read all about it on the Lemon thread.

Upshot is that if you kill the Joker and he's dead at the bottom of the cathedral - add another 50,000 points to your final score. If you like, take a screenshot of Joker on the ladder and just submit that without the 50k. Your call.

Had a couple of goes and made it to the cathedral, only to find death in every direction. Next time. Maybe.

Not a great score as I messed up the bat mobile stage pretty bad. But a start.

Thanks to some testing by capehorn and john4p we've found that there are scoring difference in the versions. So we must all use the same version. The 1 disk ocean release. I've put info in the first post. The WHDLoad is still fine.

Now we are all using the same version there will probably be a bonus for lives left, after a bit of checking to see if there are any infinite lives bugs in this version. Hang on in there, almost got it.

While testing the ipf for the 1 disk version I bettered my score.

Had a play around with the ipf and WHDload 1 Disk version. As far as I can tell there is no infinite lives bug. So I've added in the lives bonus to the scoring. If anyone does encounter an unfair bug please let us know.

I've updated all current scores with the lives bonus.

Final Score = (Level x 200,000) - Score + (Lives x 10,000) and joker bonus

While testing the WHD I finished the game. Small improvement.

Just about remembered to post this! I don't like this very much but at least I got off level one... and hopefully this image is sufficient to show I got to level two although I don't think I care enough if it isn't!

No worries Graham. Good of you to give it another go, I remembered you aren't a fan. It's a surprisingly divisive game. I'm all for it even though I was very frustrated by it at first, as a kid. Eventually warmed up to it a lot.

Had it as a kid and hated the game Good part of it carried over to why I hate Turrican 3 and every single game that uses a grappling hook

I think the grappling hook in Batman is done better than the one in Turrican 3. Dunno if that's controversial, lol. Must be hard coding hooks, I find they vary a bit in modern platformers too. Most fun one I've used was in Environmental Station Alpha.

My last go. Happy with that. It's a really quick game once you get the hang of it. Bat mobile is the tensest level with the time limit being close.
