Nobody who will buy this has any nostalgic memories about playing Doom and the like on an Amiga.

I am sure, 98% of who the target audience for this is doesn't even know there were AGA machines.

For most people Amiga was playing Turrican and Giana Sisters on the A500, and after 1991 they got either a VGA PC or a SNES/Megadrive.

I never quite saw this. It's probably just my surroundings when I was still using the A500, but I saw almost no one get a VGA (or rather SVGA) PC until after 1994. In fact, I didn't really see people upgrade or exchange their PC's at all until Windows 95 was released. I had one friend who had a 386 with VGA (but no sound) and that was only there because his dad needed it for some work related scheme. All other PC's I saw* until around 1993/1994 where XT's with Hercules monochrome only.

*) Apart from one more VGA based 386 machine at school that was hidden from all the pupils. I only got to see it because I was already a massive computer nerd at that time. So some of the staff showed it to me. They didn't even really use it for much, it had been a gift from Commodore because they had bought a whole bunch of C64's (seriously, several classrooms had one for every student) and later 8088 based Commodore PC's (monochrome monitors only, obviously).

Same with consoles really. Almost all the consoles I came across until around 1993 were NES or Master System and a few Atari 2600/5200's. I didn't see a SNES until that time when a friend hired one for a weekend. But he didn't buy one, nor did anyone else around me have one.

Must have been the area I lived in. Just goes to show how different things can be dependent on where you grow up

Me and my circle of friends were always rather techy, and we always wanted the best stuff.
In 1988 that was the Amiga, but when Wing Commander 1&2, Ultima 6&7, Gunship 2000, Comanche, Silent Service 2, and a couple of other games arrived, with the Amiga port looking gimped with its 16 colors compared to the 256 colors on the PC or not being made anyway, my friends jumped ship almost immediately and went over to PC.

By 1993 that transition was over.
I couldn't afford a whole setup with a new monitor at the time, so I just bought a SNES in 1993, and kept the A500 until 1995 when I got a Pentium 75 from my first job, but barely using the A500.

I guess that me and my friends (plus our combined parents) simply didn't have the cash for that route

Still remember being in awe at the astonishingly high price for that 386 my friends dad bought. I thought he was nuts, even at that age I understood you could buy a nice 2nd hand car for that money and to my 13 or 14 year old brain it didn't look like it was all that much better than my C64

Well, as a bit same for me. The Amiga was a bit steep for 1100 DM back in early 1988. Buying one was only possible because we sold off the C64 and its disk drive.

Those friends of mine who had PCs that early were either two years older than me, and/or had a paid apprenticeship after their middle school "career", while I went to school a few years longer on "Gymnasium" and didn't have money for a PC.

Totally agree

Well not with the PC part.

As for consoles though, I bought a Sega MegaDrive and also a SNES upon release.

The Amiga 500 then got much less use sadly.

I think I didn't even get an A500 until the SNES was already on the market lol (I think that's correct, I got my A500 late 1991). For me it went C64=>A500=>A1200=>A1200/Towered with expansions=>PC/PSX (the last two both in 1996)

I have no nostalgia for CGA/EGA graphics and loud PC speaker noise. A mini 486DX266 however that supports both Soundblaster and Roland output... That is a peak DOS-era gaming machine.

Not a 286 but there's a Mini-ITX 8088-based super-PC with one of those amazing graphics cards called the NuXT.
