Creating/improving 2D game assets with Stable Diffusion

Here are some results from an experiment with Stable Diffusion to create or improve 2D graphic assets from 90s SHMUPs.

The results are not quite perfect and it needs some work to get acceptable images. However, it shows what's already possible...

Battle Squadron (Amiga):

"Reimagined" versions:

Salamander:

"Reimagined" versions:

Otoko Dama (X68000):

Those eyes.... you sure they don't have an organ coming out of the mouth to inject corroding enzimes and sucking the molten innards?

this looks great. Of course would be useful only for a 4K remake. I doubt that ECS graphics can be A.I.fied to AGA with the same resolution.

Dune II

Original screenshot:

"Reimagined" (0.5 denoising):

"Reimagined" in 32 colors (Amiga palette):

Please note that the reimagined version doesn't match the original in detail (mainly due to the "high" denoising value) and it's not even correct with the cloak so it needs some fine tuning for sure.

Another way is to begin with a sketch (pen drawing on paper):

Take a photo of the sketch then add some colors to it:

Find a first matching image (a T-Rex head that is):

Reuse it to find a better result:

Going on:

And on:

Resize/crop the image and reduce the number of colors to 16 (Amiga lowres, four bitmaps):

And finally convert it to IFF:

Aside from stable diffusion, you can now also use Dall-E 2 for free (no points so far) on https://playgroundai.com/

Seems like external linking to the images has been disabled :/ I have to inspect the DOM to get the URLs of the images.

Works here. There's been a similar problem in the Guess the Screenshot thread. Do you view the thread from a mobile device?

It's most likely a "security" issue due to the HTTP protocol links (instead of HTTPS).

Those look pretty nice. If i may ask, what prompts did you use to generate all those fighters and to reimagine the people like the Emperor from Dune 2?

Its interesting how fast this went from science-paper to useful tool.
I wanted this to generate higher res alien / monster models from various angles for a TKG graphics update ;-)

AFAIR the spaceship prompt was like:
Code:
futuristic, 3d rendered, ((spaceship, starship, starfighter)), octane renderer, photorealistic, intricate detailed, symmetric
and for the emperor from Dune 2 it was something like:
Code:
((portrait photo)) of an old man of the senate, white hair, gorgeous face details, cinematic lighting, very high detailed, 8k
Note: the weights are from the v1.4 checkpoint release.

Thanks I tried them in my GUI ( https://nmkd.itch.io/t2i-gui ) whelp... maybe i shouldn´t use Waifu Diffusion for the Emperor

Edit: Tried it with the Xenon 2 Fighter too and your fighter promts, and there are some cool designs possible
