Battery Damage?

Hi ,

I received this week a 4000D which I bought from a seller in Germany, the seller said that battery needed to be removed but clock was working...

I switched it on to make sure it all worked and had a look at the time setting requester and noticed that the 'Save' button was operational...
Next day I switched it on (couldn't resist) to check something and then had another look at the time setting requester and Save button was no longer operational...

I opened it up to remove the battery, to my delight the motherboard looks as if it just rolled off the production line, pristine condition except for a tiny bit of discoloration near the battery...
I removed the battery and found it had indeed started to leak...
I've cleaned the area under the battery and surrounds up with isopropyl and still can't see any damage anywhere..

My question is, if the 'save' button in the time requester is greyed out, does it automatically mean the RTC circuit is gone ?

Is this also valid for A500 with WB 1.2/1.3 ?
I'm asking because I have an A500 with internal Hardital 2 (2 MB RAM trapdoor expansion, with clock & battery), and I was never able to get the clock work .

Yes. I just passed it on in the hope it would restart 4000 too. When my 500 lay dormant for years and I started it, the clock would show <unset> <unset> <unset> but when I issue this command , it would restart. I believe to 1978. Since it uses cordless phone batteries , it needs to be run or else the batteries die.

@Brakus

The RTC circuit has an issue my friend.
I have an A4000D with the same issue & have currently ordered new parts to repair it my self.

http://amiga.serveftp.net/RTCrepair.html

The above link is a very in depth and concise diagnostic procedure which should identify If any tracks or pin holes have been damaged.

The Latch IC does fail quite easily If exposed to corrosion.

I cannot recomend Mr Hoffman enough he is a very helpful & genuine guy & his costings are very fair, and he is quite local to you too (NZ)

Good Luck
TC

@TheCorfiot

I'm afraid the RTC indeed has an issue...

I've just given the latch a better inspection and I've cleaned some green off the legs, also removed the simms just in case... Some hidden damage under there too...

Thanks for the tip re Anthony, I'll e-mail him and see what he says

At the very least by the end of it this 4000 mobo will be well travelled !

@brakus

If you have a meter run through the continuity tests, It may lead to an open track which can be easily repaired.

In my case it seems the latch has died & one of the resistors in the SIL package is reading wrong. all my tracking proved OK.

I've decided to replace the RTC chip, Latch & Resistor package in one go anyway save repetitive strip down of the system. If that don't bring it back to life then

Best of luck
