What ever happened to all the authoring tools?

Back when the Amiga was the machine for multimedia and authoring we were graced with a wide range of software like CanDo, Helm, Foundation, Hyperbook, AmigaVision Pro, and many more. Now that the standard is Winblows all we get is M$ Deepthroating everyone with Visual C++ & Visual Basic. I went to the book store yesterday and there were no general programming books on Basic, they all covered only Visual Basic. Like that is the only basic that there is, sad very sad. Sure we have Java but too bad we no longer have the dream of making programming easier for the newbie like the guys that created CanDo had. What is even worse is the Microsoft greed machine is trying to kill off even Java by making new bastard laungages like C# & .NET

Borland should have developed for the Amiga like their ads said they would in AmigaWorld #1, those poor bastards.

There are some basic alternatives, like Blitz Basic PC/ Blitz Basic 3D, DarkBASIC, Rapid-Q, XBasic

I know I let my 8 year old try Blitz Basic and DarkBasic on the PC but there is nothing like Amiga Vision Pro, CanDo, Helm, Foundation etc.

Yeah, I know. I was just pointing some *Basic* alternatives. Amiga was a whole different (and better) world, with it's own applications that still remains unsurpassed.

I don't know how well these BASIC compilers are doing. Hope their companies are getting some money, so that they may think in doing something like CanDo for the PC.

Or even better one or more of these old Amiga authoring tools should be updated for Amiga OS 4.0 PowerPC.

I care. I was really into CanDo for a while and made some cool(ish) stuff with it. When I spoke with the developers at an Amiga show, they started talking about charging licensing fees in the future if commercial software was created with it. I let them know my displeasure with this decision. Whether they followed through or not, I'm not sure, but I rather lost interest in the product at this time.

I played with AMOS a bit, but always found Blitz to be the kickass BASIC on the Amiga. I used AmigaVision some, but really hated the interface.

But try as I must I just could not get into these tools like I used to get into AMOS Pro. The sourcecode has been released for STOS, Easy AMOS and AMOS but I don't think it is out for AMOS Pro.

I guess some of you might want to dig into the sourcecode or get into it, or maybe you might just want to get into Tori Amos, I don't know.

Isn't stuff like:

Adobe Premier
Macromedia Flash
Macromedia Director

..more akin to things like CanDo, Scala etc?

Flash and Director have "Lingo" as a programming language if you need to use it (you don't have to)... I generally assumed this was the "next generation" of multimedia authoring tools...

Or were you really thinking about high-level programming solutions... (which Flash and Director certainly fall into too anyway on the Lingo side).

Anyway, obviously this is Windows stuff and I guess changes are fairly slim there was an ex-Amiga talent working on them... But you never know!

Yes Director would be on the list. Is the current Director fro the same programmers on the Amiga that did The Director from Right Answers Group? Authorware 6 which is like a higher end version of Director would also make the cut. Flash would be a good MovieSetter replacement which was not brought up. But Premier is a cheap mans Video Toaster and is not worthy. The PC version of Scala would make the list though, it is very good even for a Windows app. Scala the company is loaded with ex-Amiga and Commodore talent.
