My understanding is that it's a gray area--HD disks formatted as DD aren't as reliable as true DD disks, but they usually work (at least for awhile...don't store anything precious on them).

@pubzombie

Amigakit is my pusher for real double density disks and they work like a dream =)

That being said, I have a couple of old games on "modified" (taped in the corner) HD disks that are still going strong after ten years.

I've still got HD floppies from way back from the mid 90's, that's over 10 years old 'n' I haven't had an ounce of problems with them yet (not that I use many floppies these days). The ones that have stuff on them still work so my advice is, use whatever you want, they seem to outlive their advised lifespan

Yep, HD disks with the holes taped over seem to work just as well as DD disks in most cases.

Depends on the brand, luck + various random factors. And even if the hole has been taped over it's of course still a hd disk, i.e. totally different to a dd disk. And as such I wouldn't recommend using them for important data if you only have a dd drive, you might regret it! It CAN work but it most probably will just cause corrupted/lost data, russian roulette so to speak.

If you're getting them for free, why not double up on everything, just to be on the safe side. If things do start to fail too much, go buy some DD Floppies from Amigakit
