Your favourite PUZZLE game
(while were at it with all this 'what's your favourite..' stuff..)
WHAT's YOUR FAVOURITE PUZZLE GAME? ..or don't you guys play these very *intellectual* games? ![]() mine is 'Eggerland Mystery' on the MSX by Hall Laboratories. I'm sorry can't bring up a screenshot right now, but I'll do a short decription on this game: You play this little red ball-like character who has to travel through many mazes to rescue his girlie (heard this one before allright). But in these mazes there were lot's of very well designed and original enemies and you really had to puzzle your way through it. I guess this game was later released on the NES, being called Lolo's Adventures |

I'm a Tetris man (I guess this counts as a puzzle game). It's easier for me to name the ones I hate than which Tetris game I like best. I'll have to think on which I like best though. Lemmings is pretty brill. And Bob's Bad Day is always fun to muck with (not my fav, though...I dunno if I even have a fav!)

Kyodai looks very shanghai like. That was fun for a while.
On the PC my favorite puzzle game was, and probably still is if you go for nothing but puzzle, The incredible machine 2. Had a lot more stuff than TIM1, Sid and Al's incredible toons were just not inspired enough for the whole toon setting to work. Other than that if you could mix some action into it I like the 2 oddworld games for the PC. On the Amiga my favorite would be locomotion, trying to gain oversight of what's happening and finding a quick redirection. |

Hmm, great thread.. after Shmups, Puzzles are my favourite genre..
My favourite one is The Castle and Castle Excellent for MSX (It seems like the MSX is the king of puzzle games, huh? ![]() ![]() Puyo Puyo for many differente plataforms (Including MSX, where the series was born ) is a great game too, it's in the same vein of columns/tetris , but much more fun, IMO on Amiga side, I REALLY LOVE Gem'X (Brill game from Kaiko) ... The musics on this game are just fantastic, and the game seems easy in the beggining, but then it gets harder and harder, and in later levels, with the tight time limit, the game gets nearly impossible .. X-It (Or Zonked .. whatever it was called) is an excellent puzzler for Amiga too ... Chip's Challenge is pretty good too... although most ideas of it were already in Eggerland .. Here some screenshots of The Castle Last edited by Shatterhand; 11 April 2002 at 05:29. |

And here are some pics of Eggerland Mystery..
The best way to describe Eggerland Mystery is ... Epyx probably stole all good ideas of "Chip's Challenge" from Eggerland, and Eggerland is more charming and challenging. I want to add that I love the Eggerland Mystery series.. there's a sequel for MSX, that's UTTERLY hard, great for who seeks a real challenge in the puzzle arena And also there are 3 sequels for the NES called "Adventures of Lolo" . Actually, the 1st "Adventure of Lolo" have lots of stages taken from Eggerland 1 and 2. Lolo 2 and 3 have only new stages. |

Tetris is at the first place, but Gem'X comes immediately after.

Can Chips Challenge be regarded as a puzzle game? I really like this one with its water 'n' fire puzzles.
My favourite puzzle games on other formats are Zenji on C64 and Puzzle Bobble/Bust-a-move on PC. |

I used to love the Dizzy games (even though the puzzles now seem a little simplistic).
Also, I have some fond memories Boulderdash. On my megadrive I spent ages playing Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine (sort of like columns - hey, if you're allowed tetris I'm allowed this). There seems to be a mixing of genres when considering "puzzle" games though - Dizzy is like a platformer but has puzzles no more formulaic than some adventure games (which may also be considered puzzle games). I think puzzle games certainly have to be more than "find the key", but after that it's a pretty hard genre to define. |

@Drake1009: I can assure you. The Castle games are basically puzzle games. There is allmost no action, no jumping madness, no shooting, but carefully planning the steps one would take, the path, the bricks one is going to move. The game is all about that.

Its got to be Lemmings or Pushover!!
Both these games got really hard in later levels. Good games though. |

Fissuras pretty much said all about Castle.. athoulgh it's a platform game, the main focus is in puzzles, as the action is pretty slow (And that's made intetionaly by the programmers , you aren't supposed to test your reflexes, but your brain... )
I think you can mix puzzles and action very nicely in games. I think Benefactor and Lost Vikings are 2 great examples of it (And 2 EXCELLENT games imo .. mainly Benefactor, that seems to be one of the most underrated game ever ) Akira and Retroman are other 2 eab members who know The Castle in MSX, and I think they love it too ![]() Vivash , Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is just the american version of Puyo Puyo for Mega-Drive ![]() Here goes some screenshots of the original MSX version of Puyo Puyo |
