lha on the pc q.
I´m having problems with lha on the pc. I use it with winzip but it refuses to extract files with nonstandard dos name (8+3 letters). Is there any newer version of the lha exe for dos? It´s really anoying having to send the files to the amiga, extract them there and then send them back again...

I believe WinRAR supports LHA files internally. WinZip is dire. I personally use EasyZip 2000, which also has internal LHA support. Amazing how a major player like WinZip can't even rise above DOS level nonsense like this...

I also use WinRAR because of the internal support for LHA. To bad it didn't support the other Amiga compression formats like DMS, LZX, et al.

Well, lzx would be good, but it was never really available for the PC, whereas LZH/LHA actually tried to have a go at it as a PC format, as well. But the PC crowd stuck with their Zip. As for DMS, well...its intention is to read/write Amiga floppy disks, so outside of emulation circles, you'll not likely see it supported in a traditional PC app.

Personally I use Xace. That supports Lha, Lzh, Rar, Zip, Arj and many other obscure compression formats. And it's small and handy.

WinAce here
I'm using WinAce. Besides a nice look, it supports many different archive types, and has a lot of functionalities (fast archive checking, for those .ace spanned archives).
The only thing I'm missing is an option to exclude certain files/filetypes when compressing a directory (so I use MaintainZip for that). |

amiga archive files...
I've setup my Windows XP PC to handle with Amiga archives. I use Winzip for all the standard PC archives and UltimateZip for lha-files. I use the dos-command unlzx to handle with lzx-files. I configured the lzx file type to work with unlzx.exe. Gave the lzx-files a nice icon (pictogram). One double-click on a lzx-file in explorer and the file is extracted. For all other formats (which I hardly have or use) I start AIAB and extract the files on my emulated Amiga.
Ah, and I use Irfanview to work with iff-files. Really cool program, loads pictures very fast. Hasn't got to do with this subject, but I just wanted to mention it ![]() |

To bad there wasn't a plug-in for some of these file types. Oh well, I'll continue to use WinRAR for most of the archiving then go into emulation to get at unsupported filetypes if need be.

If you want to stick with DOS for some reason, there is a version of LhA which supports long file names here:
http://www.aminet.net/pub/aminet/util/arc/lhant.lha I've used it for a while and had no problems ![]() |

Umm, that's a Win32 character-mode program - not a DOS-program.
